When a Child Can Begin Kindergarten

Use our Kindergarten calculator to see when your child is eligible to attend Kindergarten.

2020: Children can start kindergarten in the fall of 2020 if they turn 5 years old on or before Dec. 31, 2020. This change is the result of amendments to the School Act made by the provincial government in Dec. 2017 that requires a common age of entry for all Alberta school boards effective for the 2020-21 school year.

Note: If your child is born between Jan. 1 and Mar. 1 2016 they will be eligible to start kindergarten in 2021.

Note: your child must start Grade 1 if they are six years of age or older on Sep. 1.

When to Register for Kindergarten

Registration for the 2020-21 school year will begin on Jan. 20, 2020 for traditional calendar schools such as ours.

How to Register

  1. Complete the Student Registration Form.
  2. Bring the following documents to your designated school (regular program or alternative program):
    • completed registration form
    • child’s proof of age and legal name (birth certificate or passport)
    • proof of your address (driver’s licence, municipal/federal correspondence, financial/residential documents or a utility bill)

Note: If your child is not a Canadian citizen, please call 403-777-7373 to make an appointment to register at Kingsland Centre (7430 – 5 Street SW).

More information on kindergarten can be found on our kindergarten webpage.

Once your school has registered the student, you will be able to create a MyCBE / PowerSchool account. This online account lets you register for services and pay fees.

Kindergarten Staggered Entry & Alternating Fridays

Kindergarten students are sorted into AM and PM classes. A schedule will be sent home with parents in the opening Kindergarten information package and will be posted on the school website as well. This schedule will indicate whether AM or PM classes attend on alternating Fridays.

There are two days designated during the first two days of school where new Kindergarten students are invited to attend for part of the school day in small groups to begin acquainting themselves with teachers and the Kindergarten environment at the school.  Times for staggered entry are mailed to families ahead of time so parents know when to bring their students to school. Classroom teachers are not assigned to particular students until the end of staggered entry to ensure all classes are balanced for gender, identified learning needs and visible aptitudes. Since our Kindergarten program employs a full team-teaching approach, all students work with all teachers and students in the program and share space and resources every day. All teachers will know and work with all students – the responsibility group assignment serves teacher assessment and parent communication primarily.

Regular Kindergarten programming occurs during the regular instructional hours of school Monday – Thursday, 8:25 AM – 11:15 AM or 12:15 PM – 3:05 PM. On Fridays, for early dismissal days, AM and PM Kindergarten classes will alternate attendance. Please refer to the Calendar for specific attendance days.

AM/PM Kindergarten alternate on Fridays 8:25 am – 12:05 pm.
