Last day of In-Line Skating

Today we learned about diamonds in Wonderopolis. We went to music and played the instruments. After music we worked on our comic strips.

For math we worked on another number visual.  (See below).

This is what we had to do -

  • In which numbers can you find ½?
  • What is half of each of these numbers? Label the VALUE of ½ wherever you can
  • In which numbers can you not find ½? Why?

After lunch we learned about different types of mineral tests. We went to in-line skating and then we worked on our flower art.

Chocolate Rocks!

Reminders

Scholastic book orders due on Friday

Tomorrow we have In-Line Skating - remember your helmet!

Today we went to library first thing.

We worked on our rocks and minerals booklet. Today we leaned about "Mohs" Hardness scale, which measures the hardness of rocks. We learned about the different minerals in rocks too.

We started learning a new strategy today at number talks. we are learning about halving and doubling and we talked about "factors" of numbers. After that we did another I spy 1/2 sheet. This was an extension activity and it was much harder!!!

After lunch we made Chocolate Rocks! We used white, dark and milk chocolate. In a bag we crushed them into sediment then we compressed them into metamorphic with the heat of our hand. The next step was to drop our rock into a bowl that was sitting in boiling water. We watched the rocks melt into magma. Ms Keir transferred the "molten rock" into two paltes and put it in the freezer. After about 20 minutes we had igneous rock! Ms Keir broke it up and we got to eat it.

We worked on our flower art till the end of the day.

I Spy 1/2!

This morning we went to library first. After library we did some writing. We had to choose one of the 6 countries we looked at in Social Studies and write why we would like to move there.

After recess we played a math game called I Spy 1/2. Ms Keir gave us a visual to look at and find all the half shapes in it. (see picture below)

We drew all the shapes we found on dot paper and shaded in the half.

After lunch we did some quiet reading and then continued with our Rock Cycle comic strip. We went outside for gym.

Making Rectangles

Today we started the day learning about the different layers of the earth in Wonderopolis. We did some fraction SPLATS before we continued with our comic strips. Everyone finished their plan and was able to start work on their full size comic strip. Some even got to the next step - outlining with sharpie.

After recess we did math. We looked at Area and Perimeter together. We chose a number of square tiles between 10 and 36. We had to make as many rectangles as we could with the tiles. We marked the perimeter and the area, then we cut them out and stuck them in order from smallest to largest perimeter on the white board. We found out that the rectangles with the longest perimeter were the long skinny ones.

After lunch we did our science booklet and worked on layers of the earth. We went outside for gym and Ms Keir taught us how to play rounders. When we came back we continued with our flower art.

Comic Strips!

What is the shape with the longest perimeter that can be made on the geoboard, if

 - The shape can have no more than 6 vertices?

- The shape can only have right angles?

- The shape may not include acute angles?

- The shape can only be positioned on half of the geoboard.

We found the shape quite easily! Ask me what it was. We also learned a bit about angles. I know what a right angle and an acute angle is!

After snack and recess we continued with our art and writing. We are finally finished it and will publish it tomorrow. We worked on our Peru posters after lunch. Gym was basketball. Today we practiced shooting. We ended the day reading in our literacy circle groups.

Geoboards and Posters

This morning we continued with our writing that goes with our art. We finally got to go outside for recess!!! After snack we moved on to math. Today we used the geoboards. We had to make  a "shape" with the largest perimeter we could. We measured our shapes using string and a meter stick,(See the pictures below). The largest we found was around 95cm!

In the afternoon we did our literacy circles again. We worked on our art and then we worked on our Peru posters! It was yet another busy day in grade 3!
