From the grade two’s

Thank you for your support with our Stephen’s Backpack toy and book sale.  We have raised approximately $800.  This year, the grade 2’s volunteered to fill 50 backpacks, giving us the opportunity make 50 homeless children very happy.  Unfortunately, this year we have only raised enough to fill 32 backpacks and are short approximately $400.  This is why we need your help!  If all the students in our school donated $1, then we would be able to fill all 50 backpacks!  We will be accepting donations until Friday, November 15th!  Thank you in advance for your help!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKqfm858SQQ

Today all of the kindergarten classes talked about what a lock down is and we practiced how to do one.  They are aware that there will be one done at school this week but don’t know when.  By the end of the school year we all will have done one official one and several Kindergarten practice ones.

We are talking about what good work looks like.  See if I can tell you some of the things we have been talking about.

Halloween Howl tonight.  I am sure it will be a lot of fun and I bet there will be some great costumes.

We seem to have done a lot of painting lately at school.  If your child has come home with paint on their clothes it is water based and should come off easily in the wash.  It helps if you pre-treat it first though.

Over the last two weeks we have had some visitors in our classes.  They are students from the University of Calgary, Werkland school of Education.  They are doing school visits to see just how things work in a classroom.  Some of the got right in there with us and played at centres, helped us with our jobs, read stories or just chatted with us.  We were their teachers!

Photos went home Wednesday and Thursday.  They were taken on October 10th.  If you did not get one please let your child’s teacher know.  You can order online or send back the forms to the school. Retakes are in early November.

We have been looking closely fall treasures we have all brought in.  There are some great little things.  We are drawing, sorting, counting, doing art projects and so much more.  Thank you for taking the time to help us out.

It has been a short but busy week!  On Tuesday, we did some writing in our journals about what we did on our long Thanksgiving weekend.  On Wednesday, we learned some new math games that have us recognizing the numerals 1- 10 and matching quantities.  Today we did some more math.  Some of the classes made Power of Ten cards in their books and others solved the problem:

     I have 2 cookies

     You have 3 cookies.

     Who has more?

     How do you know?

How are you doing on your fall scavenger hunt?  Sorry to Mrs. Decottignies pm class who just got them today.  If you don’t get a chance to do it, not to worry we will be sharing all that has been brought in.

We had so much fun doing SOGO.  Each group spent an hour outside on both Monday and Tuesday.  On one of the days we ran around a course and counted our laps by collecting playing cards.  We then had to find shapes that were on poles, kind of a scavenger hunt.  The other day we did some orienteering.  There were 8 stations numbered and we had to go and find each of them using a map.  We were so tired after spending the time running outside!

Hi Kindergarten families!

Welcome to the blog! Reminders will always be on the top of the blog, followed by a brief description of what we did. Hopefully this will help with the question "what did you do at school today?", to which many students reply "nothing".

Reminders:

-SOGO next week Monday and Tuesday, dress for the weather

-Library Monday – please return books from last week

-OPEN HOUSE – Thursday evening from 6:00 – 7:30

-NO SCHOOL Friday – PD Day

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind!

We learned where the gym, music room and bathrooms are in our school and got to meet the music and teacher, Miss. Bell, and the PE teacher, Mrs. Roworth.

We read stories and are practicing full body listening.  Ask me to show you what it looks like.

In Kindergarten, we learn through play and we're working on building up hand muscles with play dough and vertical drawing, practicing social skills at snack and experimenting with building blocks and dramatic play. We also worked with loose parts like buttons, beads and rocks. Go Noodle is a fun part of our day where we get the wiggles out and follow a guided dance.

We have gone over classroom expectations and practiced walking with quiet hands and feet in the halls.

One day this week, we came together as a big Kindergarten group with all 3 classes to create our Kindergarten Treaty after reading the story by Robert Munsch ‘A Promise is Promise’.  We explained to them that a Treaty is like a promise and as a group contributed a list of promises that we are going to strive to follow for our Kindergarten year.  Ask your child what some of our promises are.

Have a great weekend,

This weather continues to cause havoc with the clothing we wear to school.  PLEASE continue to practice putting on your child’s winter clothing.  We try to give them a good amount of time to get dressed but there are some speedy one and some slower ones.  We do not want them waiting all dressed for too long before meeting you outside.

Today we talked about orange shirt day.  We watched a video of some of the unkind things that were done to children such as cutting their hair, changing their names and even taking away their special clothes.  In our journals, we drew a picture of things that we can do that are kind.

We visited the library today.  We allow the students to take out a total of two books and we have found that taking out one book a week works best.  Please do your best to return them the following Monday.

The Kindergarten Team
