Principal's Message

Message on Nov 8

This morning we commemorated Remembrance Day with our students, staff, parents and guests.  Our grade 5 and 6 students led the assembly with poems, songs, a Power Point presentation and two videos that helped us reflect on the heroic acts of our various men and women who have served or currently serve in the various branches of national defence. Our students were very solemn, as well as respectful throughout the assembly.  Thank you to the various parents who complemented both students and the lovely assembly.
In Canada, Aboriginal Veteran’s Day is marked on November 8th, the same day that we commemorated Remembrance Day at Glenmeadows School.  Indigenous people in Canada have reason to be proud of their wartime contributions.  It is estimated that more than 7,000 First Nations members served in the First and Second World War, as well as the Korean War.  In addition, an unknown number of Inuit, Métis and other Indigenous people also participated and served in the Armed Forces.  Estimates of one Veteran’s group state that over 12,000 Indigenous men and women have served in the three wars (Veteran’s Affairs Canada, 2019). In preparing for our presentation, a select group of Grade 6 students researched Indigenous contributions to the Armed Forces and learned about Tommy Prince, the most decorated Indigenous veteran during WW2.

Our first Parent Information Session at Escuela Glenmeadows School was well attended by over 100 engaged parents.  We heard that the presentations on STEM, Math, Literacy, Spanish and Music were very helpful for parents to better understand how the Alberta Program of Studies is delivered by our teachers, as well as how parents can support at home.  We thank our School Council and Society for their great collaboration in organizing this great informational evening.
A friendly reminder that next week our school-wide Superhero Literacy Week will take place! Students are encouraged to bring a fiction or non-fiction book/comic to read.  The English Language Arts learning outcomes will be developed at each grade level in an enthusiastic and personalized manner.  Students are so excited about the coming week!
