Regular Program at the CBE

Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.

Homework

The CBE makes recommendations about homework in Administrative Regulation 3066 - Homework. Assigning homework is up to the individual teacher. The homework may also be the completion of work not completed in school. Students and parents are encouraged to set aside a regular time each evening for home study and/or recreational reading. The nature and amount of home study recommended are as follows:

Division 1 (Grades 1-3)

Parents and teachers should encourage children to read each evening. Formal assignments are occasionally made, but from 5 – 10 minutes of systematic study and review per night is generally recommended.

Division 2 (Grades 4-6)

Formal homework assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher, particularly for students who need special attention or help, and for long project assignments. Most often this may be within the half-hour to hour range. Students are responsible for the prompt return of any homework assignments. In the event that homework is not returned, the teacher will contact the parent or guardian to discuss the most suitable arrangements for the child to get the forgotten work. Under no circumstances will a child be sent home without the knowledge of the parent.

Exploring Career Choices

For Grades 5 to 9 at the CBE, we offer Career & Technology Foundations (CTF). This is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that focuses on essential skills common to occupational areas, and our students personalize their learning based on their interests and passions.
