Principal's Message

GW Greetings

We wish all our Griffith Woods families a very Happy New Year!! We hope everyone had an opportunity to do something they love with those they love during our winter break. We look forward to the remainder of our school year.
A few reminders:
Parent Information Evening on Anxiety
We are excited to announce that Dr. Brent MacDonald will be at our school for a parent presentation on Anxiety January 16th at 6:30 pm. Please RSVP to if you are planning to attend and with how many. Parking relaxation has been given from 6 to 9 pm at Elveden Dr & Springborough BV.
Just Relax!: Anxiety in Elementary & Junior High Students (& Their Parents Too!)
Anxiety is a very common and – in many cases – very useful emotional response to a range of situations. However, some students can become overwhelmed by anxiety. Their assessment of situations leads them from a healthy apprehension to an unhealthy fear response, which can cause a great deal of discomfort. Like most people, when kids feel uncomfortable, they tend to avoid or get away from whatever it is that is causing the discomfort. Some other students can become perfectionists, while others develop rather mysterious physical complaints before school in the morning. In this lively and interactive presentation, Dr. Macdonald will discuss the increasing trends in anxiety in elementary and junior high students (and their parents!) and the best ways to successfully work with and through performance-related anxiety.
Report Card Information
We are pleased to announce that we are transitioning to an online report card this year that can be viewed directly on your PowerSchool Public Portal.  This is the place you already log into for attendance, conference sign-up, register for transportation, noon supervision and to pay student fees. The online report card will become available to parents on January 30th, 2020. There is an option to print a copy for yourself at home. Instructions on how to view and print will be sent out closer to the date.
Our January 22nd School Council meeting will focus on assessment & reporting. We will share with you the new math stems, along with clarification regarding the 1 to 4 Indicator scale. Our meeting begins at 6:30 pm in the Learning Commons.
Coffee and Conversation
We would like to welcome any interested and available parents to our first ‘Coffee and Conversation’ on Monday, January 13th from 1:30 -2:30. This gathering is the result of feedback from last year’s parent survey. The administration (Rhonda and Elan) will be available to talk and answer any wonderings connected to teaching and learning you may have. Please RSVP to if you are interested in joining us.
Registration for next year!
Registration for next fall begins on January 20th and will be on-going after that. Any students living within our designated boundaries of Discovery/Springbank Hill are welcome to add their information to prospective grade lists for next year. We look forward to meeting many new Kindergarten students and their families as they pop in to register for the upcoming school year. Update - students now have to be turning 5 years old on or before December 31, 2020 to attend Kindergarten. This change is the result of amendments to the School Act by the provincial government.
On Monday, your child will also receive a green form requesting confirmation that your child will either be returning to Griffith Woods for the 2020/2021 school year. This information is will assist us with our planning and organization for the next school year.
Home Reading Info Session K-2
We would love to invite you to an informal session around supporting Home Reading with your child(ren). This would be helpful for parents of students currently attending Kindergarten, grade 1 and 2. This will take place after school from 2:45-3:45  in the Learning Commons on Thursday, February 6th, 2020. Please RSVP to if you are interested in attending.
Term Two – Grades 7 to 9
Our junior high students transition to term two on Monday, February 3rd. This is when they start their new options for February to June. The option timetable goes through a complex process to develop and enroll students. It is very challenging to make changes at this time unless there is space and/or a willing student to switch. Please email Ms. La Montagne if you have any concerns around option classes.
