Welcome Back

Welcome Back!
Hello Parents/ Guardians of Griffith Woods students,
Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year at Griffith Woods School! We are so excited to have so many returning students and thrilled to welcome new students to the building. A big thank you to all our families for supporting students on the first day of school, the transition back to school went very smoothly. Our older students have already stepped up to be leaders of the pack supporting our younger students at dismissal time by being bus buddies. We feel honored to work with your children and support their learning in order for them to thrive and look forward to connecting with each of you through conferences, other school gatherings, and athletic pursuits students take part in.
We are excited to welcome new staff to our Griffith Woods family. Please join us in welcoming:
Ali Goodman has joined our PE team and works with Grade 5, 7, 8, and 9 students. She also will be supporting our middle school learners with our health programming.
Our grade 7 team welcomes Kevin Jozsa who is taking over for Ms. Banks who is on maternity leave. He is teaching Math, Science and Phys. Ed. Many of our students already know Kevin from last year as he was one of our very talented student teachers working with Mr. Finlay.
We welcome Victoria Atkinson to our grade 9 team. Victoria teaches Humanities 9 and supports our grade 8/9 options teaching Leadership and Communications Technology.
Jeff Bennett is working with our grade four team on a temporary contract until Feb. 3rd when Sarah Walters returns from maternity leave.
Danielle Beach has returned from maternity leave and has joined our grade 2 team.
We were thrilled to be able to re-hire Emily Reinbolt, who since got married and is now Emily Smith. She has joined our grade one team.
The grade 5 team is thrilled to have Robyn Pugh join their team this year as the fifth teacher in the grade 5 team.
We were also fortunate to hire back Sandy Mailey to join our lunchroom supervision team. She worked in our school last year and takes the position of Jen Pooley who is now working as a library assistant in another school.
Communication is extremely important to us and we want you to feel comfortable contacting staff with any wonders you may have so your questions can be answered efficiently and with accurate information. We will be communicating with you in a number of ways. School Messenger will be our main form of communication. Student agendas have now arrived, so this is another vehicle that will be utilized for students Gr. 3 to 9 to connect with you between home and school. The whole school will also be using digital tools, such as- ‘Class DoJo’ to share information with you. We look forward to the first face-to-face parent/teacher/student meetings on Sept. 19th and 20th where you can share details around your child (ren) to their respective teachers and let us know what your hopes are around this school year. Additionally, from the office we will be sending out a GW memo biweekly with all the important dates and information coming up. This is meant to be a quick snapshot and reference for you. You can also find ‘dates to remember’ on the bottom left hand side of the school website:
By Monday, you will receive a first week email with information around routines, expectations, assessment and communication. We are excited to announce that all teachers will also be using Class Dojo this year. You would have received a letter home this week with additional information and the chance to sign up for your child’s class Dojo. We cannot have you set up until we get the form completed and returned. We have received great feedback from our families on how useful this tool is for parents. This year, we have our Phys. Ed teachers and music teachers adding a Class Dojo for each grade team they teach.
School Forms and School Fees
On Monday, the school package with all the necessary “back to school” forms will be sent home with your child. Please ask for it as many leave them lying in their backpacks without a friendly reminder. J It is a lot of reading, but these forms are very important for us to get the necessary information ready so your child can be successful and safe at school. Fees have begun to be updated in “My PowerSchool App”, but this will be an on-going process so please keep checking for updates.
My Bus Stop App
If your child rides the school bus, we strongly encourage your family to register for the My Bus App. Our School Code is: CBEZOCO9OE.
CBE Transportation uses a bus route monitoring app called MyBusStop for all Southland Transportation routes. You can use the mobile and web application GPS tracking service to see real-time information such as the route stops, route schedule, route progress and possible route delays for your child’s yellow school bus. The app was created and is maintained by Southland Transportation.
How to Register
To register you will need your school's unique access code and your child’s bus route.  Our School Code is: CBEZOCO9OE
Visit to register and create an account, follow the prompts and select the bus route you want to track.
Once registered you are now ready to track the school bus using the website or on your mobile device.
Download the MyBusStop app for iOS or Android
Questions, concerns or suggestions regarding registration or use of the application can be forwarded to
School Council – Room Parent Opportunity
A warm welcome to the start of this new school year 2019-2020!
On behalf of the School Council we would like to invite you to consider being a room parent coordinator for your child’s classroom. This wonderful opportunity will help bridge the communication between home and school, particularly with school council sponsored events. The time commitment will vary depending on the age of your child and the needs of the classroom teacher. The room parent could be used to help illicit volunteers for school activities, field studies and special events.
If you are interested and willing to assume this role please send your name forward to your child's classroom teacher. If more than one parent steps forward, we will draw names for this position. Once a parent is in place, you will receive an email from the room parent requesting you to sign up to receive updates and information. This is important because as a school, emails cannot be released to parents without consent.
The first school council meeting is on Wednesday, September 25th at 6:30 in the Learning Commons. All parents are welcome to attend.
Thank you!
