Principal's Message

January 2020

Principals’ message   We hope you all had a good winter break regardless of what you celebrated, did, or didn’t do!  Sometimes  just having a break from routines is the gift. Routines are comforting, even crucial, to humans.  Take a moment to reflect on what routines you have in your day: getting up at a certain time, going through the same morning procedures, driving to work on the same route, etc.  We thrive with some consistency in our day.  Children are particularly sensitive to routines and any changes.  Does your child ever seem to be overly upset or just seem to be “different” when a change in a routine occurs?  Routines happen all around us in ways we often don’t even acknowledge. One annual occurrence that we as a school community recognize and honour is our winter solstice. The winter solstice is the celebration of the return of the light.  This is the time of year we focus on simplicity. When commercialism seems to be pushed just a little bit more, we instead look to tread lightly. It’s a time when Montessori Grace and Courtesy have an intent focus and when Peace Education is at the forefront. (Montessori Life, Dec 2016) We were able to celebrate the Winter Solstice with the children prior to Dec. 21st and the significance in understanding and embracing this time is important for our physical, emotional and social wellness.  As the shortest day of the year occurs at one of the coldest times of year in our environment, our bodies respond to the shift.  Historically humans embraced winter solstice as a time to slow down, rejuvenate through rest, and spend precious time with loved ones.  Animals hibernate. Plants stop growing but continue to feed off food stores below the ground. There are many beautiful readings on the winter solstice and the key message is to allow what years of evolution cannot change.  It is a time to take a moment, be intentionally kind to others, and enjoy the winter months in whatever ways you can knowing our days are getting longer and the light and warmth will soon return! A reminder that Kindergarten registration begins Jan 20th for Fall 2020.   With warmth and gratitude, Bonnie and Rita
