One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the School Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

What is School Council

The role of school council is to provide parents with an opportunity to become involved in and discuss issues that impact their children’s education. School councils work together with the principal to support and enhance student learning by discussing and advising on issues such as academic programs, school policies, budgets, safety, bussing, technology, and school activities. We also host various events throughout the year to create a positive and connected school community.

As a parent or guardian of a student attending Maple Ridge School you are automatically considered a member of school council and have voting rights at meetings. We greatly encourage you to attend these monthly meetings as important updates and context is given about what is happening in our school and at the broader provincial level. They also offer opportunities to ask questions and voice thoughts about education in the context of Maple Ridge School.

Thank you to those families who came out to the grade 1 celebration of learning today. They have been learning all about cause and effect by designing Rube Goldberg machines. They are then transferring their learning to what cause and effect looks like in an ecosystem.

Learning the science of wetlands and ecosystems today through drama. Thanks to @Evergreen_Th for inspiring our thinking and your creative story telling. https://t.co/vIasS9Wo8I

It was a #pinkshirt kind of day. Many of our students were engaged in fantastic conversations about the power of collective kindness. Way to go Maple Ridge! https://t.co/beX1EgXCyV
