Hello and welcome to my Teacher Page

I am Erik Sprong and I am the Assistant Principal here at Mount Royal School. I have been an Assistant Principal for the past 10 years at various locations in the CBE ranging from Elementary to High School spanning a First Nations cultural focused school to culturally diverse schools and everything in between. I am student centered, trauma informed and believe in a restorative approach to student behavior support.

I am also one of the Grade 8 and Grade 9 mathematics teachers. I strive to keep student work at the school so that students can utilize my and their peers collective understanding to maximize their ability to manage the course content. I also believe in practice and have attached links below for students to access at home. This allows students to practice what they are learning, come to class the next day with any questions they may have, thus increasing the contact time that students have with the material.

About the Courses:

In general, the math course focuses on four strands: Number Sense, Patterns and Relations, Statistics and Probability, and Shape and Space. Students will use a variety of resources to assist in their learning. The students will be engaged in practical problems and skills, collaborating with peers as well as activities to expand their understanding. The students will also be using technologies to enhance and communicate their mathematical knowledge.

Math 8 is a course where students continue to transition from arithmetic to algebra. The concepts learned here will be built upon in grade 9 mathematics. Students will be covering main topics on squares and square roots, integer math, beginning algebra, surface area and volume, coordinate geometry, probability, statistics and problem solving throughout the course. Students are expected to stay on top of homework and review concepts daily in order to ensure maximum success. Students can use the links posted above to practice their skills on the topics covered in class.

Math 9 is a foundational math course for all junior high school students. This is a very busy course with many learner outcomes that are critical for success in all future math courses. Students will be covering main topics on understanding power notation, math with powers, introduction of rational numbers, squares and square roots of rational numbers, algebra and linear equations, polynomial math, composite 2-D and 3-D shape analysis, statistics, probability and problem solving throughout the course. Students are expected to stay on top of homework and review concepts daily in order to ensure maximum success. Students can use the links posted above to practice their skills on the topics covered in class.
