ACCESS

Greetings ACCESS families,

I just want to say that it has been a wonderful year and we have really enjoyed working with this group of students. Wow, I can’t believe it is already almost May!! With the weather cooperating, it has been nice to be outside again and we have begun our community competencies unit. The unit involves learning about our local Mount Royal community and teaching the students how to be safe when in the community. We have been going on community walks twice a week (usually Monday and Thursday afternoons). The students have really enjoyed the fresh air and have been practising the skills taught in class, including crossing the street safely and understanding different community signs and traffic lights.  It is important that if you are planning to pick up your child earlier than dismissal time, or are going to pick them up instead of getting on the bus, please let us know ahead of time by sending an email or calling the school. This way, we adjust our schedule and can be sure that we are at the school for you to pick them up.

These are some important upcoming important dates:

  • Early dismissal 12:20 PM on Thursday April 25th, 2019
  • Optional parent teacher conferences 2:00 P.M.- 6:00 P.M (see sign-up sheet attached).
  • Wednesday May 8th, 2019 Field Trip to Butterfield Acres.
  • No school Friday May 17th, 2019 for PD.
  •  No school on Monday May 20th, 2019 for Victoria Day.

November

Good morning ACCESS families

Hope everyone had a good October and is getting ready for November. While the weather will be changing, we will still be taking the chance to get outside daily and continue going for weekly community walks. We continue to appreciate that you have been sending your child in the appropriate clothing for the weather. In Calgary of course this could be shorts one day and a snow suit the next, so thank you for ensuring they are dressed to go outside every day, regardless of the weather. We would also ask that if your child is away that you call the school and let us know. Also, if you are planning to pick your child up during the school day for an appointment, please let us know in advance. This will ensure that we are not on a community walk when you come to get your child.

With the school year now in full swing the time seems to be flying by. We have been busy in class working on a Fall unit and have learned about apples and leaves.  In math, we have been working on numbers up to 100 and in science we have been learning about shapes and primary and secondary colours. The students have been working hard and we have established daily routines that have helped everyone to be successful in class.

Some important dates for November are:

November 9th- Remembrance Day Assembly

November 22nd- Parent teacher conferences- 8:00 A.M.--8:00 PM

November 23rd- No School - PD Day

October 2, 2018

Good afternoon ACCESS families,

It is hard to believe that September is over and it is already October. The students have been doing very well and it has been a pleasure to work with such an amazing group. We had a very productive first month of school and everyone has gotten to know each other better and form some strong connections. We have started our vocational assignments and the returning students have been very helpful in assisting the new students in completing the school paper and bottle recycling. Some students have also began to integrate with the grade 8’s for Phys Ed class and have been working with a student buddy to make sure they are comfortable and on task. In class we have been learning about primary colors and shapes and have been completing an “All About Me” theme to help us get to know each other. We will be sending home an All About Me questionnaire for you to fill out and then each student will have the opportunity to present and share with the class about their families and personal interest.  We have also taken advantage of the weather and have been getting outside as much as possible and have started to go on community walks. The students have also participated in once a week cooking class in the foods lab where students vote what we make. So far we have pizza, banana bread, pancakes, and a fan favorite  - mac & cheese. I appreciated that you have been sending the proper clothing to go outside, regardless of what the weather is like.

Here are some important upcoming dates for October:

Monday October 8 - No school

Tuesday October 23 - photo retake day

Friday October 26 - no school PD day

Wednesday October 31- Halloween Dress Up Day

Take care,

Alex Gall

Dear ACCESS Families,

Welcome to my classroom blog! I am excited to get this up and running.  My name is Mr. Gall and I have been teaching for 15 years, in both the junior high and elementary settings. This is my 4th year at Mount Royal school and I am very excited to welcome you to the 2018/19 school year. When I’m not teaching or blogging, I love to spend time with my wife and my three children. We are an active family with camping in the summer and hockey and gymnastics in the winter. I am really excited about the upcoming school year and cannot wait to see the returning faces from last year and have the chance to get to know the new students better as we spend the year learning and exploring together. My education assistant,  Ms. Beavers, is also very excited about the upcoming school year and has been extremely helpful in setting up the class and helping to plan for the new year. These first few weeks have  given the students and us the chance to explore the classroom and school and the opportunity for the returning students to see old acquaintances and to make new  friends. We will be taking the opportunity of getting outside to enjoy the weather while we can, so please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Please be sure to check out our classroom blog often to see what is new in the ACCESS class.

Some important upcoming dates include:

September 26 - Terry Fox run

Best Regards,
