Principal's Message

Online Learning at Nickle School

For the next while, we will try to repeat our messages to the community right here at the Principal's message. On March 30, we sent the following message out to all families:
Dear Parents,
We truly hope that you have had a restful break in the past week and thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we navigate our new reality in online learning.
The CBE and our teachers have spent the past weeks creating programming opportunities that will be available online for our students.  Our teachers are taking up this work on a very steep learning curve to provide learning opportunities and activities that will begin in the next couple of days.
We have met with designated Team (Online) Lead Teachers this morning to firm up our organization around programming for your children and then subsequently met with all teachers. Attached you will find a schedule for this week’s learning and a second schedule which will repeat for the foreseeable future . This schedule takes into account the Alberta Government mandate for educational outcomes to be covered and the expected time that your child can expect to be engaged in learning:
Grades 4 – 6
Focus on language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy outcomes; opportunities to incorporate science and social studies outcomes through cross-curricular learning
Teachers will assign an average of five (5) hours of work per student per week
Grades 7 – 9
Focus on core mathematics, language/literacy, science and social studies
All option courses are now cancelled until further notice
Teachers will assign an average of 10 hours of work per student per week
The intent of the scheduled times is for teachers to be available for contact which may include video or chat sessions and to provide your child with structure around learning. Each block is one hour long and we anticipate that 50 minutes will be used for teaching and learning and 10 minutes for a much-needed break.
It is important to note that all Grade 5 and 6 students are required to engage in Mathematics (Numeracy) and Language Arts (Literacy) learning for a total of 5 hours per week or about 2.5 hours per course. Grade 7 to 9  are required to engage in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts learning for a total of 10 hours per week or about 2.5 hours per course.
Teachers will be working hard today and on Tuesday doing two tasks:
Contacting you and your child to find out how you are doing and to communicate and answer questions about this new learning reality. This will include your child’s access to technology at home, including access to a computer and the internet. Teachers will begin by calling you first.
We are also making a plan to address the needs of students without these resources and to determine how to support students with paper packages.
Preparing learning online through Google Tools and D2L
We expect, as the March 29 to April 3 Schedule suggests, that on Wednesday and Thursday, students will be able to:
Test connections to the learning using D2L and Google tools
Become familiar with online learning routines and tools
Begin some review work
In the following week, we anticipate that online learning will be in full swing as is shown in our schedule for April 6 onward.
We are looking forward to working with you in this new way. Thank you for your support for your children and our staff!
Mike and Dean
