Important Dates

We follow the CBE Traditional Calendar. The calendar sets common start and end days, non-instructional days and holidays. For our school’s additional non-instructional days, late entries, early dismissal days and events, see our school calendar page.

Planning is underway for what the 2020-21 school year will look like for our students, staff and families. The CBE has created an internal task force with representatives from every service unit to lead the planning for different scenarios. All of our decisions will be guided by the advice of the province’s chief medical officer of health and Alberta Education guidelines. The safety and well being of our students and staff will come first in any decisions we make. More information will be provided to families before the first day of classes on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020.

There are a number of different ways you are able to pay school fees. Parents can pay online using VISA, MasterCard, VISA Debit, Interac Online or set-up pre-authorized debits from your bank account; in-person at schools; or by sending in a cheque to the school or CBE.

Yellow School Bus Transportation

Yellow school bus routes for the 2020-21 school year are created over the summer and are based on the addresses submitted before the pre-registration deadline in the spring. While CBE Transportation continues to accept pre-registrations, these will not be considered until route changes are done after Thanksgiving.

Yellow school bus route maps are posted on the CBE website: www.cbe.ab.ca/busstop

In October, a confirmation email will be sent to all parents/guardians who have submitted a pre-registration, if the parent/guardian has subscribed to receive messages. It will include transportation fee information and payment options. Families can cancel their pre-registration with no financial penalty using MyCBE / PowerSchool by Oct. 31, 2020.

More information about 2020-21 transportation service levels and proposed fees will be posted on the CBE website by the end of May.

Conditional riders can also register using MyCBE / PowerSchool. Applications will be considered after eligible riders registrations have been processed.

Families need to purchase a reasonably sized back pack that has room for their labelled lunch and snack, as well as library books and mittens, toques, etc. depending on the weather. FOR SAFETY, PLEASE LABEL THE BACKPACK EITHER INSIDE THE ZIPPERED AREA OR WHERE IT SITS AGAINST THE BACK (NOT WHERE VISIBLE TO OTHERS WHEN WORN.)  All students MUST also bring labelled indoor shoes from the very first day – preferably comfortable running shoes that are slip on, have springy laces, or have Velcro fasteners.

Noon Supervision

Northern Lights School has a fully supervised lunchroom program for students in Grades 1 – 4. Families must register online through their My CBE Account. Registered students need to bring a nutritious lunch (reasonably sized) they can eat in about 20 minutes or so. Although students are allotted 20 minutes to eat in their classrooms and then have a 25-minute whole school outside recess together, they can have additional time (up to the full 45-minutes if necessary) to eat. We have a fully staffed Lunchroom Program that establishes expectations and supervise students for the lunch block.
