Principal's Message

April 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians of Peter Lougheed School;
This term, Peter Lougheed School continues to be engaged with a multitude of experiences, both within and beyond our school walls.  Last evening, students from Ms. DiMarino’s music class performed down at the 15th Annual ‘Orff the Wall’ concert in the Jack Singer Concert Hall.   Peter Lougheed School was one of 8 schools from across the city who performed to a sold out audience.   This is Peter Lougheed School’s first time performing in this event.  Our students, with the dedicated guidance of Ms. DiMarino, performed exceptionally well.  We were the first Middle School entry in this most exciting event.  This will hopefully be the first of many ‘Orff The Wall’ experiences Peter Lougheed students have!
Next week, our music program will experience a wonderful opportunity here at the school.  We will be blessed to have Roger, a master drummer from One World Drumming, in our school leading a Drumming Artist in Residency program.  This program will see students working closely with a musical artist alongside Ms. DiMarino’s music classes.  Students will have rich and deeply focused lessons which will end with a performance/showcase on Friday.  This program costs a lot of money and was made available through the Alberta Education’s Classroom Improvement Fund.  Ms. DiMarino applied for this grant $$ last fall!
On Sunday, April 22, we have students from Grade 9 travelling out to the British Columbia west coast to attend the Bamfield Marine Science Centre.  This five-day off-site experience will bring students into direct contact with real scientists as they learn about the marine ecology of the temperate rainforest.  This is our first Grade 9 west coast experience as a school.  We are joining students from Ted Harrison, Terry Fox and Tom Baines.  We believe that this experience will grow into a Thunder Tradition.  We value the experience as a significant and worthy one that supports and extends our vision as a school.
On Wednesday, May 2, Grade 8 students will be presenting their Prototype Projects down at the Telus Spark Centre.  This is an evening event that will see our students presenting their prototype projects along with other students from across the city.  This is a public event, whereby Peter Lougheed students will be showcasing their learning and themselves to parents, teachers and the general public.  Please feel free to come and support our Thunder scientists!!
Finally, I would like to thank all the parents who have informed the school of your plans for next year.  We received our school budget last Friday.  We are deep into the process of building our school organization for next year.  Our next year’s budget is based on a projection of student enrollment.  Currently, we anticipate that we will have approximately 850 students attending our school next year.  This would be a significant jump from our currently student population of 720.  The anticipated classroom configuration for next year will be 30 homeroom classes:
Grade 5 – 8 Classes Grade 6 – 6 Classes Grade 7  - 6 Classes Grade 8 – 5 Classes Grade 9 – 5 Classes
Our building was built to accommodate 960 students.  While we were anticipating growth in our opening years, the rate of growth is faster than was predicted.  For next year, we will have enough classroom spaces and lockers to receive our students.  We don’t anticipate having to fill any of our specialized program rooms with homerooms (eg. make art room a homeroom class).
Our growth will see us hiring more staff to support students and deliver program.  Over the next 6 weeks, we will be busy involved in staffing our school for the upcoming school year.  In addition to more students and staff, we understand that our growth will have an input on every component of our school.  One element that we have been working with Calgary City Police, Calgary Bylaw and CBE Transportation is how students are transported to/from school.  Next year, we anticipate that we may have up to 10 school buses servicing our school.  This will require additional school bus spaces along Saddletree Drive, which is the road that runs along the south side of our school.  Safety on our streets is all our responsibility and I wanted to let you know that we have been working with authorities to help us so that your children and you can feel safe on our streets.
