Principal's Message

Welcome

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Families of Peter Lougheed School;
"I'm a community person, I think in terms of community before individual. That's the essence of Albertans and to a large extent that's the essence of Canadians as well." Peter Lougheed
This quote from Peter Lougheed captures the essence and spirit of our former Premier of Alberta.  His words invite and inspire us as a community to understand the role and importance of community and leadership.
We have officially entered into our second year as a new middle school in the community of Saddleridge.
We would like to welcome you to Peter Lougheed School.  This is such an exciting time for us as a school and the community of Saddleridge.  At Peter Lougheed School, we believe in our former Premiere’s vision of working together as a team.  This is the place where we can build a shared set of values and practices that allow each student, staff member and parent to represent the best of ourselves individually, but also, collectively as a community.  This is our collective work as a school community.
Our vision and expectation is that each person (student, parent, staff member) will contribute positively to the identity and spirit of Peter Lougheed School.  We expect students to be involved, bring their ideas, passion and voice to our school.   We value the importance of new learning and the development of skills that allow each of us to demonstrate excellence and work that matters.  This will not be easy work, nor should it be.
This year, we are excited to offer a full Grade 5 to 9 middle school program.  Our student population has really grown.  We had 470 students attending our school last year.  In April, we anticipated having a student enrollment of 630 students for the 2017-18 school year.  As of today, we have 709 students registered and enrolled in classes.  Some of the new growth can be attributed to the addition of our Grade 9 program, but much of it involves many new families moving into Saddleridge, but also, some families who have lived in our community have made an educational decision to have their child transfer schools.  The growth we have experienced is across all Grades, with most occurring at the Grade 8 level.  Given our continuing rise in enrollment, we opened an additional Grade 8 class on September 8th  to meet the class size demands in those homerooms. Here’s where we sit as of September 18, 2017.
School Organization for 2017-18 (25 Homerooms)
Grade 5 – 6 Homeroom Classes
Grade 6 – 6 Homeroom Classes
Grade 7 – 5 Homeroom Classes
Grade 8 – 5 Homeroom Classes
Grade 9 – 3 Homeroom Classes
Last week ALL 709 of our students began their Explore/Option classes.  Thank you to all parents who helped students make their selections in these exciting courses.  It’s so wonderful to see the whole school filled and being used by Peter Lougheed Students and Staff!
We would like to remind all parents that we are holding an Open House ‘Meet and Greet’ program on Thursday, September 21st between 5:00 and 7:00 PM.  This is an opportunity for you to come and meet our staff and see the school.  Students are expected to attend along with their parents.  Our first School Council meeting will take place at 7:00 PMon the same evening.  This is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for our council, which will set the new council membership for the 2017-18 school year.  All parents are welcome!
Sincerely,

Gord Choate                           Jim Parent        Principal                                 Assistant Principal
