Principal's Message

Oct 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians of Peter Lougheed School!
We have had a very successful start up this fall.  This year our enrollment has grown to 828 students.  This is an increase of 352 students over two years, since our opening in September of 2018.  While we did anticipate growth at the school, the rate of this increase was a surprise.   We have worked extremely hard at the school to hire staff and build a cohesive team so our students have success, learn and feel a deep sense of community at our middle school, THE Home of the Thunder!
This fall, we have welcomed 24 new staff members into our school.  Of these 24 positions, seventeen are teachers and seven are support staff positions.  A full list of our staff can be found at http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/peterlougheed/about-us/contact/staff/pages/default.aspx

Our staff is committed to creating academic excellence at Peter Lougheed School.  All staff bring compassion and unwavering dedication to creating the conditions for students to experience success.  At Peter Lougheed, we believe that children thrive when they feel the support of caring adults in an environment that invites them to take risks, try new opportunities, and challenge themselves in ways that enable them to discover their own identity and confidence as a young human being.  At our school, teachers will look for experiences beyond the classroom to make learning relevant, connected and inspiring.  Over the past few weeks, all our Grade 5’s have visited the OH Stampede Ranch in Longview, Alberta.  Whether bringing guests into our school like our School Resource Officer or having the Calgary Fire Department bring their Fire Safety Trailer to our school, we always seek out experiences to help students bring meaning to their academic learning.

At Peter Lougheed, we also provide students with over 51 extracurricular opportunities.  These range from our fully subscribed Athletic Sport Program, to a wide range of Clubs.  We encourage ALL students to get involved and have new experiences that are positive, supported and fun!
I have two announcements to bring to your attention.  This year, we are fortunate to have two new partnerships.  Firstly, we are recipients of a Maker Space Grant, which has brought approximately $ 15 000 into our Learning Commons and school in general.  Maker Spaces allow for students and teacher to enter into the world of engineers, architects, technologists, project managers, construction workers, builders, etc... as they design, develop, prototype and evaluate their ideas in the practical and applied world of building things.   Secondly, we are fortunate to have created a partnership with a local company in Calgary, Velvet Energy.  Velvet Energy has approached our school to support our students having hands-on experiences beyond our school walls.  As a company, they are committed to help our school with field trips, both in terms of supporting us with some money, but also, and as importantly, providing us with some volunteers for some field trips this year.
Finally, I want to let parents know that they are always welcome at Peter Lougheed.  I understand and appreciate that your children might tell you that it is not cool to be seen at school, but know this, children feel good when their parents take a genuine and caring interest in their life.  I would like to remind parents that each of you is a member of our School Council.  We meet the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm.   Please come join us for a tea, coffee and learn more about your child’s school.

Sincerely
Gord Choate
Principal
