School Access

The outside doors to Ramsay School are locked at all times. When outside with students, staff members unlock doors using their door pass cards to allow entry into the building. Throughout the day, visitors and students arriving late are to use the front door of the school to gain entry. The video monitored entry system allows office personnel to determine who is at the door and to admit arrivals without having to leave the front desk. Individuals wishing to gain entry must press the appropriate doorbell button.  A video camera then displays the individual’s image on a screen in the office. Once admitted, the person must sign in at the office.

A second doorbell is available for after office hours which will ring throughout the building.

All parents and visitors are required to sign in at the office and are asked to wear a visitor/volunteer badge while in the school during the school day. Please be aware that all adults who are working with children in the school are required to complete a police information clearance as is described in our Volunteer Program section below.

Visitors and Volunteers

All parents, visitors and volunteers are required to sign in at the office and are asked to wear a visitor / volunteer badge while in the school during the school day. Please be aware that all adults who are working with children (other than their own) in the school are required to complete a police security screening as is described on our Volunteer page.

Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child’s classroom learning. Speak with your child’s teacher about opportunities for you to help or check on our Parent Board outside the office. Please be aware that all parents who work with children are required to complete a Calgary Police Information Clearance, which is valid for a period of 5 years. This process typically takes 4-6 weeks. We encourage all parents who think they might want to volunteer and work with children during the school year to stop by the school office and begin the process. One piece of government issued photo id is required.

Volunteers are asked to sign in each time they enter the school at the desk in the office and to wear a name tag at all times while volunteering.

Picking Your Child Up

Sometimes parents wish to take children out of the lunchroom or from school for a special occasion or appointment. It is important that we are informed so that we know where your child is. A sign-out book is kept inside the main office. Parents can call in to the school office to let us know of these arrangements, or send a note, or come in to the office to sign out the child. Please also help us to be aware of any custody agreements that may dictate who your child is permitted to leave the school with. Copies of these documents should be given to the secretary.

If you are picking your children up early for appointments or arrive late for pickup, please pick up your children at the main office.  In the interest of safety, children are not to stand alone outside.

Please note that upon dismissal, all students will be picked up outside the main office unless they have made arrangements to meet outside the school. Students are encouraged to exit through the side door out to the field area on the south side of the school. If a parent is not waiting, the students are asked to come to the office and wait for their parent there.

Supervision

Parents are asked to send children to school between 8:15 and 8:30 A.M. and after lunch, between 12:45 and 1:00 P.M. unless they are in school-organized events. Teacher supervision is provided during these time periods.  In the interest of safety, all children are also reminded to leave the playground when dismissed and check in at home. There is no supervision after 3:00 PM.

After School Supervision

Please be reminded that students must leave the school field and playground after school and go home unless they have direct parent supervision. School staff members are not available to supervise outside after school. If your child is not supervised, they will be asked to go home. We are glad to keep kids safe in the office until parents arrive. If you have made an arrangement for another parent to supervise your child after school, please send a signed note to the office so we can ensure that they are put in the hands of their designated adult. We cannot let students go on the say-so of another parent unless authorized. If you are outside supporting your child and you have questions or concerns about an unsupervised child, please let Mrs. Scarrow know so she can address the issue with the parents. It takes a village to raise a child, and we know that if we all work together, we can ensure that our children have safe play areas with adequate supervision to teach boundaries and care for self, others, and this place. Please call if you have any questions about this CBE policy. Thank you.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school via SchoolMessenger.
