Principal's Message

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Families,
Welcome back to all of our staff and students for an exciting new school year in 2019-2020 at Robert Warren School!  I hope you had an exciting and adventurous summer vacation!!  A special welcome back to all of our teaching and support staff, and a warm welcome to our new staff members;  Carmen Yunta and Corallia Sevilla.  We would also like to welcome our visiting teacher from Spain, Ignacio Rodriguez Quesada.
Our staff members look forward to working together and building a learning community where we embrace opportunities to excel in a bilingual environment, and where students strive for personal excellence as confident and reflective life-long learners.  We want all of our students to be leaders.  Every person in the school has a different role; whatever role each person has, we want each member to be a leader.  By doing so we all create the culture of the school – we are all culturalizers.
Our new school year starts on Tuesday, September 3 at 8:45 AM.    Doors will open at 8:25 am.
All grade 6 to 9 students are asked to check the Homeroom lists that will be posted in the activity area and then proceed directly to their homeroom.
September 4 will be spent in homerooms , so students will not be following the regular class schedule but rather making connections with their homeroom teachers and peers.
All students will be dismissed at 3:28 PM.
Wednesday, September 5, we will be following a regular timetable.
A few reminders to begin the first month of school:
New Mexico Parent Meeting – September 3
School Photos – September 12
Terry Fox Run & BBQ – September 13 (alternate date – Sept 27)
Please visit our school website for more information and upcoming events later this week.
I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning!
Ms. Palmer
A Change to our Digital Device Policy - Away for the Day   no digital devices
In the past, Robert Warren School had a digital device policy in place.  That policy required that students put away their digital devices at the warning bell (morning and afternoon) and that it was only allowed to be taken out with teacher permission during class time for learning.  The exception to this rule was at lunch time when digital device use was allowed.  This policy has been challenging to implement.  The use of digital devices has become a concern due to the difficulty enforcing the policy as it now stands.  During class time it is apparent that digital devices are serving more as a distraction to our students rather than effective learning tools.
Parents feedback has raised some concerns about unsupervised use of cell phones at lunch time in the school. These included how cell phones are resulting in a lack of face to face conversation and social interaction and accessing internet to play games.  Other parents commented on the fact that the use of cell phones could potentially create a disadvantage for those students who do not have a cell phone.
There is much research to suggest that digital devices in the school environment are detrimental to students:
Studies have stated that more time on electronic communication results in lower psychological well-being in adolescents.
Some studies link a decline in human relationships due to screen time with anxiety and depression.
Other studies have shown that the mere presence of the phone (on a desk or in a pocket) can lower working memory capacity.
Recent surveys by the Screenagers “Away for the Day” initiative found that 82% of parents do not want their child to use their phone during the school day.
Parents are encouraged to visit the following website for further information on the research on phone use at school:
For these reasons, Robert Warren School will be implementing a new digital device policy for the 2019-20 school year.
Away for the Day:
Personal digital devices are not to be used or visible at any time during the school day.
All digital devices must be placed in the student locker immediately upon entering the building.
This includes early morning practices/clubs while under teacher supervision.  Devices must be put away once on school property and immediately placed in the student locker upon entering the building.
At the end of the school day (3:28 M-R, 12:47 F) students are free to use their devices within the school.
We will borrow the Screenagers initiative name and call this our “Away for the Day” policy.  The policy will be sent home on Tuesday with students. We encourage all parents to read this policy and we ask that parents support us in its implementation.  The policy will have an impact on those parents who have expected their child to answer texts and or phone calls during the school day.  All parents will need to understand that messages left on their child’s phone will not be heard until the end of the school day.  Urgent messages will need to be called in to the school office where school personnel will forward these to our students.  We encourage all parents to ensure that after-school plans and early-dismissal pick-ups are well communicated to your child before the school day.
We value your support in implementing this policy for the upcoming school year.
