Summer School at the CBE

The Calgary Board of Education has summer school opportunities that allow high school students to:

  • Upgrade courses

  • Take a course that doesn’t fit in your schedule during the school year

  • Gain valuable work experience while earning credits

We offer summer school through Chinook Learning Services and CBe-learn. Summer school classes fill up quickly, so register early to avoid disappointment.

Provincial Diploma Exams usually occur during the first two weeks of August. Schedules are subject to change by Alberta Education at any time. For up-to-date information visit the Alberta Education webpage.

Visit our summer school programming page on the CBE website to learn more.

Online Learning at CBe-learn

CBe-learn offers a variety of online high school core and complementary courses during the summer. Online learning allows you the flexibly to take one summer school course to help you catch up, keep up, or get ahead.

Summer School Meeting

Counsellors will host a meeting in the theatre in late April. We will review all necessary information regarding summer school. Students will receive a summer school request form at that time. Counsellors will review individual request forms and if deemed appropriate, students will receive a Prerequisite Information Form (PIF) signed by their counsellor.

Why Take Summer School?

  • Upgrading or special circumstance (IB student and third Science).
  • It is not a good idea to take a course for the first time. Each class covers one week of material (maybe more with particular courses).
  • Students can take only one course during summer school (whether it's online or in class).
  • Classes run from 8:15 AM - 12:50 PM. Classes are in AM only and are longer this year due to fewer days (125 hours condensed into 80 hours with same curricular outcomes).
  • Attendance is strictly enforced. Please plan to attend all classes from start to finish. No accommodations are made for later arrival, early finish or even Stampede breakfasts!

When Does Summer School Start?

  • Grades 10-12 summer school starts July 2-29, 2019.
  • Registration begins on April 29, 2019.
  • Book your registration appointment online.
  • Provincial Diploma Exams (Grade 12): August 1-12, 2019

How to Register

There will be an information meeting during lunch hour in later April. Information will be posted on monitors, in addition to an email that will be sent home.

Students will complete an initial request form stating the class they would like to take and why. This form should be handed into Student Services.

Counsellors will review this form and, if it is appropriate, they will sign and complete the PIF which they take with them to their registration appointment at Chinook Learning Services (students should book this appointment online as soon as possible).

See Chinook Learning Services website for course/book costs/rentals and for any updates or changes. Sir Winston Churchill does not provide any student materials.
