Principal's Message

Summer 2018

The school year has rapidly come to a close and with it a flurry of activity.
In our last few months, students shared their learning journeys through two Celebrations of Learning. We saw the diverse talents of our students in two Talent Shows, enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast, participated in a fun-filled Sports Day and capped it all off with a Family Dance.
We had the honour of hosting a Volunteer Tea to show our deep appreciation to all of the volunteers who help us do what we do each day. Thank you again to all of those volunteers who were able to attend and also to those who help us out each day in numerous ways but were not able to attend the tea!
We also had some amazing learning opportunities. Grade 3 students went to Social Enterprise School, where they explored the concept of global citizenship through a cross-curricular lens. Some of our Division Two students attended the Calgary Young Writer’s Conference. The whole school attended the final Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra performance. The Kindergarten and Grades 1 & 2 students went to the Zoo to conduct some scientific studies of the animals and insects. The whole school participated in our ArtFelt residency. Students created wet or dry felt pieces that captured learning they had been doing in class. Our Grade 4 and 5 students had a week at Kamp Kiwanis where they participated in active learning experiences in Science, Physical Education and Health. We are very grateful to the School Council for supporting these program enhancements.
Unexpectedly, we were selected to have an Australian Football residency come to our school. Children from Kindergarten to Grade Six were very fortunate to spend the second last week of school becoming ‘Footy’ experts and enjoyed this program immensely. The football coaches even offered to run a station for Sports Day!
You may have noticed our three Naturalized Areas looking refreshed and revitalized. Home Depot, parent volunteers along with some student volunteers from Kindergarten and Grade 6 spent a few hours one morning in June putting down new mulch, pulling weeds and pruning trees and bushes. A big thank you to Home Depot for the donated supplies and to the parent volunteers who spearheaded our Home Depot partnership and recruited parent volunteers!
We would like to congratulate our Grade Six students as they finish off their educational experience here at Sunnyside School. For some it has been as long as 9 years (including their pre-school experience) and for others just part of their Grade 6 year. In all cases, the students left here reminisant but excited to begin their new journeys. We wish them continued success as they move to their selected junior high school.
Finally, we have a few updates on staffing. Sangeetha Rajesh left our Sunnyside family in April to pursue other opportunities. Ignacio Sesma (Nacho) came in for the last two months of the year and has been confirmed in the Lunch Supervisor position in the September. As often happens this time of year, we also said goodbye to three very special and dedicated members of our staff,  Arden Hunt (Kindergarten Teacher), Brigitta Diehl (Grade 3, 4 & 5 Science Teacher), and Laura Clarke-Brubacher (School Assistant/Lunch Supervisor). We wish them much success as they move to new career opportunities. They will be greatly missed!
I wish you all an enjoyable and relaxing summer break! Looking forward to seeing everyone in September!
All the Best,
Trudi Tallerico
