Fall Update

What a busy couple of months October and November have been for us!
Our 100th Anniversary work continues in earnest. The students have been working hard on our Sunnyside commemorative book, each class providing a different snapshot of the last 100 years. We have also set the date for our 100th Anniversary formal celebration. It will take place May 31, 2019 at 10:00am.
We are excited to inform you that our Grand-Friend reading program is up and running. Each Wednesday afternoon, we have a dedicated group of volunteer seniors come and provide all students with an opportunity to read to them. Our numbers are increasing each week and we are always happy to have more join. Thank you to our dedicated parent volunteers for the work they have done to set this in motion!
In October, our students gave two fabulous performances at the end of their SoundKreations Dance Residency. Grade 4 hosted Pajama Day and we held another successful Pumpkin Parade Halloween morning where we saw interesting and amazing costumes, sang songs and were treated to a large variety of creative Jack-o-Lanterns. Mrs. MacQuarrie also began ‘Hand Bell’ club for students from Grades 4 -6.
In November, the students had the opportunity to participate in a residency with Alien Inline Skating, which was generously funded by our School Council. We took our annual whole school field trip to the ‘Field of Crosses’ and the Grade 6 class sang again at the Sunrise Ceremony. Grade 3 hosted four special events days – Twin Day, Universal Children’s Day, Stampeders Day and Crazy Hair Day. Our Grade 6 class also had an opportunity to take part in a Social Studies field trip that included attending the Grey Cup Celebration Rally in Municipal Plaza. Mr. McAreavy began ‘Japanese Club’ for students in Grades 5 & 6.
October and November have also been busy months for the teachers. After analyzing our school data from the 2017-18 school year, we have begun work on our two focus areas of literacy and numeracy. In literacy, we are focusing our work particularly on improving the use of conventions in student writing. We are creating common teacher and student assessments across divisions to enable the children to progress through each grade with consistent language and instruction in this area.
We have partnered with Rosedale and Rosemont schools to take part in joint professional development in Math. Working in grade specific teams, we complete a common math problem each month, and meet to discuss task design, effectiveness of our lessons and examine student work to determine our next steps in moving student learning forward. Having an opportunity to collaborate with our peers enables us to reflect meaningfully on the work we do and enhances our practice.
I’d like to thank all the parents who support the school in so many ways; coming to Parent Teacher Conferences, attending special events, serving on committees and councils, and volunteering in and out of the school. Your commitment to our learning community enriches us all and is greatly appreciated.
Enjoy the month of celebration coming up!
Trudi Tallerico, Principal
