Principal's Message

A Celebratory Year Begins!

The 2018-19 school year brings a very special celebration with it. Sunnyside School will be 100 years old in 2019! As such, students will be involved with inquiry work that encompasses the last century. The children have already begun to brainstorm and investigate ideas, and explore areas of interest. We will be hosting a celebration of this learning at the end of May. Information will be sent out periodically over the year to keep you up-to-date.  If you or someone you know is able to contribute to this work, please feel free to contact the school.
September was a great month for us; one that focused on knowing who we are, building relationships and becoming active citizens in important events in our world.  I would like to thank all of those families who attended the many events that enabled our school and parent community to reconnect after the summer break. We especially wanted to thank our School Council for supporting our Welcome Back Barbeque and hosting the Fall Fair!
Our Meet the Teacher night was an important part of developing the collaborative working relationship between teachers and parents. It was wonderful to see so many families join us that evening to begin our work together.
We held our annual Terry Fox Run, this year combining it with Dot Day, celebrating that everyone can make their mark in the world. We had our first Orange Shirt Day, where children learned about the past experiences of our Indigenous people, how we can move forward and that every child matters. Our Grade Six class took a leadership role in both the Terry Fox and Orange Shirt Day events. Our Kindergarten and Grade Two classes organized our Dot Day. All classes participated in buddy activities that helped build a network of support for each child and sense of responsibility to each other. We highly value the leadership that our students demonstrate when hosting these events.
We are currently participating in our first program enhancement of the year – SoundKreations Dance. We are getting ready to entertain family and friends with our original dance creations put on by the students. We would like to thank School Council for providing this residency.
Please refer to our website and the October calendar for our upcoming activities. We have a guest author coming, Grade 4 has a spirit day planned and of course our eagerly anticipated Pumpkin Parade.

I would like to thank our dedicated staff for such a smooth start-up! They have put in long hours to get to know each one of their students, plan some amazing learning opportunities for the year to come and participate in all areas of the school and parent community.
