Principal's Message

January/February Celebrations

Willow Park students and staff have been busy over January and the beginning of February. Our dance show performed at Lord Beaverbrook on January 16thwas an incredible night! The selection of upbeat music before the show definitely got the audience in the spirit for an exciting evening. The music, lights, choreography and dancers were sensational. A huge thank you to Ms. Romanchuk who was instrumental in making this show such a success. Thanks also goes out to all the Willow Park and Lord Beaverbrook students who assisted behind the scenes during the show.
It is hard to believe how quickly the year is going! Report cards went home on January 24th. Reflecting on learning is an essential component to becoming an independent, life-long learner. It was encouraging to see so many of our students being able to share their progress in terms of the learning outcomes outlined in the programs of studies with their parents during our conferences on January 30thand 31st.
Our grade nine students, along with Mr. Khubyar have finished their high school tours and are presently engaged in the high school registration process over the next few weeks. We would like to commend the high school staff for ensuring that our students will have a smooth transition into grade 10. As a system and school, we are currently reflecting how we can further enhance student transitions.
Our Open House on January 23rd was a huge success thanks to all of our students, parents and staff involved in this special evening. It was very well attended. Our student volunteers, willingly and proudly shared their love for our arts-centred learning program. Thanks to our School Council Chair, Karen Crowdis, for the informative and kind words she shared about our arts-centred learning program.
Registration for the 2020-2021 school year ended on February 10th. Parents and students will be informed whether they have been accepted into our program before Spring Break. Great to see so many students interested in our arts-centred learning program. We are still accepting late registrations for grades 5, 6 and 9.
Students in Mr. Shank’s Improvisation Club placed third at the 4thAnnual Improvisation Competition at Sir John Franklin on Thursday, February 6th. This night was a great success thanks to Mr. Shank’s leadership and our students’ dedication and enthusiasm. We are hoping that you will join us on March 10thand 11thfor our drama production of Bubba the Cowboy Prince. The production will be held in EP Scarlett’s theatre at 7:00pm. Tickets are now available at our office and will be available for purchase at the door on the night of the performances.
Our Willow Park Music program welcomed parents to an afternoon of song, dance and music on Friday, February 7th. Our new artist in residency with Youth Singers of Calgary provided our Grade 6 students a special opportunity to celebrate the power of singing, dancing and working together as a team. It was also wonderful to hear our 7-9 band students play so beautifully and to have Jackson and Gabe try out their skills as or student conductors! A special thank you goes out to Ms. Williams, the Music parents and the Youth Singers of Calgary. It was an afternoon that truly captured the power of the performing arts!
Enjoy Family Day and we look forward to seeing students on Tuesday, February 18th.
