Students in Grades 3 - 6 have had the opportunity to collaborate with Trickster Artists to use dramatic techniques to develop storytelling skills.

The residency began by analyzing a picture prompt focusing on characters, actions, background, feelings, and weather. Students were introduced to a variety of shapes that were used to create their dramatic plays weeks earlier. For each shape, the classes brainstormed ideas using their analysis and acted out each scene. Once several ideas were created for each shape, classes took up the challenge of organizing the ideas into a cohesive story. The Trickster Artists helped the students to determine a theme for their story to support the connections between ideas. Then students organized the 6 shapes into a connected plot with a climax and a solution. At the end of the residency, the students were left with a storyboard that they will use to write their piece.

We look forward to one final week working with the Trickster Artists the week of March 4. During this time, we will continue to build content generation strategies and organizational skills that students can apply to different types of writing. The movement and creativity of the residency has kept students engaged and encouraged validation of all their ideas.

This task mirrors the Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Narrative Writing Task which is based on a picture prompt and marked most heavily in the areas of content and organization.

Our music program is led by Sra Anne Gardner, an internationally recognized music educator and choral conductor.  Additionally, several of our staff members have music backgrounds, both as educators and professional musicians, thus creating a rich music education environment that forwards the music program at our school and enhances our Spanish language and culture focus.

Students have opportunities to create music in addition to opportunities offered during class time.  For 2018, they include:

  • Division 2 Choir:  Our 80+ voice choir performs several times during the year- this year our choir will also participate in Choral Fest (March)
  • Handbell Ensemble
  • Drumming Residency

Musical Performances

Every year, our students have they opportunity to be part of at least one major performance, featuring music, drama and dance offerings.  These are very significant offerings and are a result of incredible collaboration between our instructional team, parents, and our community.  They highlight classroom learning, and our Spanish language and culture program.

  • Christmas Concert:  Grades 1 and 2 students (December)
  • Spring Musical:  Grades 3,4,5 and 6 students (April)
  • Kindergarten Celebration:  Kindergarten students (May)
  • ¿Qué pasa?:  Every year, our Grade 3 student perform in this system-wide celebration of Spanish language and culture at the Jubilee Auditorium
