Mentorship Program
Each student upon registration will be placed in a mentor group. This mentor will remain consistent throughout the student’s program at Alternative High School. The purpose of the mentorship program is to create a personal close relationship between students and a staff member. Mentors will support students in managing their learning in order that they may maximize their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be. The mentorship relationship is based on mutual trust and respect and has at its focus the success of students. The mentor group is an opportunity as well to create strong relationships with other mentees as support through your AHS journey. Mentors meet daily within a scheduled time block. The mentor should be the first line of communication and liaison with parents and other supports.
Democratic Process
The program at Alternative High School encourages students to actively participate in the management of the school. Staff and students participate in a school wide Democratic General Meeting as an aspect of school programming. This meeting is chaired by students and the agenda is generated by both students and staff. Motions that are passed become part of the school’s practices and policies. Mentors support students in understanding the democratic process and may offer credit to students.
