| Dear Andrew Sibbald Families, We hope your families have had a good start to the 2023-2024 school year and your children have enjoyed the first few days reconnecting with friends, getting to know their teachers and learning new classroom routines and expectations. As a staff, we have selected the anchor text, “The Power of One: Every Act of Kindness Counts” by Trudy Ludwig. Teachers will be taking up the learning around this text with students over the coming weeks as we start the school year together as a school community.
Our staff have already begun planning for excellent learning experiences for students within the new Grades 4-6 ELA-L (English Language Arts and Literature) and Mathematics Curriculum, K-3 Science Curriculum as well as a second year of implementation around the new Curriculum in Division One. Teachers have also begun planning off-site learning opportunities and planning residencies. We look forward to another year ahead!
A Warm Welcome to New Sibbald Staff We welcome our new Learning Leader, Mrs. Alison Gardner, who is team teaching with Mrs. Kosior in Grade One. Mrs. Braelan Veltkamp has been hired in a temporary teaching position for the 2023-2024 school year to teach French as a Second Language in Grades 4 – 6. As a school, we were able to secure funding for this position through a government grant and we are excited by the passion that Madame Veltkamp brings around both French language and French culture. Madame Veltkamp will also be supporting Div Two students in other capacities. Lastly, we would like to welcome Mrs. Tania Khurram who is supporting our youngest learners in Kindergarten as our Early Childhood Practitioner.
A Note from Madame Veltkamp Bienvenue and Welcome to French! I am Madame Veltkamp, and I am excited to be the new French Second Language teacher at Andrew Sibbald School. I will be joining the Grades 4-6 classes and working with teachers to explore topics such as family, community, and important vocabulary for everyday French conversation. I am excited to not only explore French, but also its importance to our families, our province, and the greater world around us. This year we will explore French language in new ways, including artistic projects and activities, and connecting with those in our school. I look forward to making student learning visible through my classroom blog and encourage you to reach out around any questions or concerns through email. Meet the Teacher Conferences – September 21st and 22nd We look forward to welcoming you to our Meet the Teacher Conferences on September 21st from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, September 22nd from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. To accommodate conferences, there is no school for kindergarten students on Thursday, September 21st and no school for K-6 students on Friday, September 22nd. Information will be communicated soon around booking your individual 15-minute conference through your MyCBE PowerSchool account.
Meet the Teacher Conferences allow an opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with their child’s teacher in the first few weeks of school and share parent perspective around their children’s academic and social development as well as share hopes and goals for the school year.
Volunteering at Andrew Sibbald The CBE is revising documentation and processes related to volunteering and we will keep all parents and guardians informed as new information becomes available. Thank you for your patience. We appreciate our volunteers and look forward to welcoming parents back into the building to volunteer throughout the new school year.

| Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,
As we enter the final week of school, I’d like to extend a thank you to each one of you for all your support in your child’s learning along with the contributions you make on behalf of all students and staff here at Andrew Sibbald. It has been a year full of many celebrations for our school community. Andrew Sibbald is an amazing place to be! We wish you an awesome summer ahead and look forward to welcoming students back to school on August 31st. Our website will be updated with back-to-school information for your reference. Please note, our office closes on June 30th and reopens on August 28th.
Farewell to 2022-2023 Staff At this time, we’d like to say goodbye and thank you to some of our temporary teaching staff at Andrew Sibbald. Miss Seppala, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Prediger and Ms. Grant held temporary teaching contracts this year and we’d like to extend our sincerest well wishes to them, as they move on from Andrew Sibbald. We would also like to say farewell and thank you to Miss Jade, our Early Childhood Practitioner who supported in kindergarten this year. Mrs. Horne will be moving on from her position as School Assistant. Lastly, we’d like to congratulate Mrs. Halase on her retirement from the Calgary Board of Education.
Staffing continues throughout the summer months, and we look forward to sharing all teaching and support staff positions during the week of August 28th when schools reopen. Parents & guardians will receive an email from their children’s teacher welcoming them into their new classroom learning space.
Online report cards will be enabled for viewing in your MyCBE PowerSchool Account from June 28, 2023 - July 28, 2023 (8 a.m.). During the transition, all PICs submitted between June 19 and 25 will have results mailed to applicants and will not be shared electronically. If you have your PIC mailed to you, please be sure to bring it to the school in September. Thank you! Parents, all items from the Lost and Found will be bagged up and donated on Thursday, June 29th.
On Behalf of Council and Andrew Sibbald Parent Association:
Save the Date – Casino October 4th and 5th: We are asking parents and the community to save the date for our casino on October 4th and 5th 2023. The Casino provides the Andrew Sibbald Parents Association with at least $50 000 in funding that goes back into the school. This funding pays for things like chrome books, artists in residence, field trips, subscriptions, library books, home reading books, musical instruments and much much more. Without the casino funds, we are not able to provide the same level of enrichment to students of Andrew Sibbald. Please save the date and consider taking on a fun filed shift to help our school community out.
Summer Fundraising Opportunities Please see the attached list of fundraising opportunities to support our school over the summer and throughout the year. These include: SkipTheDepot; Cobs in Willow Park & Mabel’s Labels. Money generated by these programs and other fundraisers throughout the year pay for residencies, additional books and supplies, field trip transportation and more. Thanks for your support. | Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,
Happy Father’s Day to all our Sibbald dads. Hope you have had a great day!
Thank you to our Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for partnering with the Calgary Stampede’s Batter Boys to host our pancake breakfast last Friday. It was a lot of fun! We also appreciated all the volunteers who came to help serve the pancakes to students along with all the other ways many of you helped on Friday! Mostly, we appreciated your flexibility with all our pivoting around Sports Day activities. In the end, the morning ended so well with students being able to participate together as a school community outside in our field.
Big thanks to our Grade 5 students who stepped up throughout the week to assist in organization and celebration of ‘Sibbald Games’ over the announcements, and then acted as coaches to our younger students on Sports Day. Well done, Grade 5, and well done, Andrew Sibbald students for being awesome participants!

| Gaga Ball Pit Update & Thank you! A Huge thank you to our Grade 6 students under the guidance of Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Drever for their work on bringing a Gaga ball Pit to the playground of Andrew Sibbald School. We are so very pleased to announce that thanks to the efforts of six dads from our community, the assembly of the Gaga ball Pit is now complete, and it will be ready for students to use on Monday! As well, we would like to once again thank the Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for their financial support of the Gaga ball Pit, as well as our student community for participating in the student fundraisers around this goal. This project will certainly serve the Andrew Sibbald School Community as well as the larger community of Lake Bonavista for years to come. School Council Meeting – Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons Please join us for our final meeting of the 2022-2023 school year this Wednesday in our school’s learning commons at 7:00 p.m. Thank you to all parents who have been able to participate in our School Council or Parent Association this year. We appreciate your support and engagement here at Sibbald! Sports Day & Pancake Breakfast – Friday Thank you to Ms. Hayes, Mrs. Swan and Mrs. Mitchell for organizing Sports Day for our Grades 1-6 students on Friday morning. We are looking forward to a ‘Stampede Themed’ pancake breakfast organized and funded by our Parent Association before we get the activities started. Students - don’t forget to wear your best stampede-themed attire that day! Learning Grounds Clean Up & Thank you! Thank you to the many families that came out last Saturday, June 3 to clean up our learning grounds. We had multiple families out to rake leaves, trim dead branches and pull weeds from our Learning Grounds area. Roughly 30 bags of organic waste were removed from the Learning Grounds. It sure has made a difference. Thank you to everyone for their help to maintain this learning area for our students. Students use this area for both learning and play and we are grateful to be able to be able to do so! With the improved weather, we are seeing a significant increase in the number of students cycling to school. We are so pleased our students are choosing this method of getting to school. Many of our students are doing an excellent job of navigating their way to school, watching for pedestrians and caring for their bikes. Great work Andrew Sibbald! We have a couple of reminders and tips for students: - There are two sets of bike racks. There are 6 bike racks on the parking lot side of the school by the playground. This has the greatest number of spots. There are 2 bike racks on the west side of the school in the learning grounds. Should you find limited space on this west side, please consider moving to the east side as there is far more room for bikes. Please do not lock your bikes to the trees in the learning grounds.
- All students are required to wear a helmet when riding a bike. This is not a school rule; this is based on provincial regulations.
- When locking up their bikes, students are reminded to lock their bikes with the lock passing through the frame of the bike.
We hope everyone continues to enjoy this incredible weather and stays active by walking and riding to school as often as they can! - Mon/Wed Kindergarten students

Then, from 3:30pm to 6pm, the Skip the Depot truck will be in the parking lot. At this time, anyone is welcome to drop their bottles off: parents, grandparents, friends, and the greater community. Let's make this a success and help the students in their goal of building the Gaga Ball Pit. Thanks for your support, Andrew Sibbald Parent Association
Reminder - Supervision begins at 7:50 a.m. Parents, just a gentle reminder that student supervision and entry into the school begins at 7:50. We've noticed students coming to the playground quite early in the morning unsupervised to play. Please know we cannot be responsible for student safety prior to 7:50 and if students come to play before school, they must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Thank you for your understanding.

| Dear Parents & Guardians, Trickster Week is Here! Parents, we are looking forward to a week of physical storytelling and creativity with the Trickster Residency. We would also like to say a huge thank you to Andrew Sibbald's Parent Association for covering the cost of this residency for our students. Please join us on Thursday evening for your child/children's performances. There is only enough space inside the gym for two seats per family. There are no tickets. Each show is quite different in content, and we hope you enjoy seeing what the students create with their Trickster this week. Some reminders: The first show is 5:30 – 6:30. Update & Thank You - Student Fundraising Efforts for Outdoor Gaga Ball Pit Thank you to all the students and parents who have helped support the Gr. 6 Gaga Ball Committee's fundraising efforts. It was truly appreciated. The students have successfully raised $1 500 dollars and met their contribution goal. We are also VERY grateful to the Parent Association and School Council for their support (both financial and encouragement) around this initiative. We will share out information around the building of the Gaga Ball Pit, as we work alongside CBE Facilities and timelines are established. Big Brave Update Thank you once again to our wonderful Sibbald community for your continued support with our annual Big Brave event for Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. Our kickoff assembly brought lots of excitement and sparked the hearts of students wanting to help kids who are fighting childhood cancer. We're off to a great start having raised over $1000 in our first week! Just a reminder that participation permission forms need to be back by May 18th. Check out our Andrew Sibbald Team Page to keep updated on how we are doing! https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/team/a956eddd-2496-45f4-823b-6b7ca0c29695 Save the Date – Bottle Drive Fundraiser on May 24th Andrew Sibbald Parent Association, our school's fundraising body, will be hosting a bottle drive on May 24th in support of our school's purchase of a Gaga Ball Pit for the school grounds.
