Sibbald’s Grades 3-6 Choir

Our Grade 3-6 Choir will begin on Tuesday, September 26th in the Music Room.  Students will be given choir notices this week to be signed and returned by Friday, September 22nd.  Choir rehearsals will begin at 11:50 a.m. on Tuesdays, once students have eaten their lunch.  We ask that students who choose to join the choir make a commitment to attend all choir rehearsals until our Winter Break.  We are excited to have the opportunity to learn and sing together!

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope the school startup has gone well for you and your families! The classroom communities are learning new routines and expectations, and we are grateful to welcome many new families to Andrew Sibbald this year.

Meet the Teacher Conference Booking

Parents, the CBE has required the use of a new Conference booking system through your MyCBE PowerSchool account. Conference booking will open after 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 11th. Please contact the office with any questions or concerns.

Teachers look forward to connecting with you in person on Thursday, September 21st and Friday, September 22nd. Reminder – there is no school for Kindergarten on Thursday, September 21st due to the time required for Ms. Hatchette to meet with all families. There is no school for all K-6 students on Friday, September 22nd.

Classroom Blogs

Parents, each week your child’s teacher will post a ‘Snapshot of Learning’ on the classroom blog. These learning snapshots allow for parents and guardians to get a glimpse into the classroom and see learning related to the intended learning outcomes for your child’s grade. Photos of students are only posted after parents have consented by digitally signing the “CBE Consent to Publish” form in your MyCBE PowerSchool account. Updated blog links are at the bottom of the Monday Message.

AMA School Patrols Update

Thank you to Mrs. Drever who will lead school patrols this year for our Grade 6 students. This is an important leadership role for our students, and we are proud of all Grade 6 students who have expressed interest in helping our students cross safely before and after school. Patrol training begins this week led by AMA staff. We encourage the use of our crosswalk by all parents and students. Thank you for your extra patience as our newly trained patrols learn their duties over the coming weeks.

School Council AGM – This Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

All parents and guardians are invited to our school’s School Council meeting this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons. Volunteering for a role on the School Council Executive is a great way to contribute to our school community. We look forward to seeing you there. Andrew Sibbald’s Parent Association will meet directly after the School Council meeting.

Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope your families have had a good start to the 2023-2024 school year and your children have enjoyed the first few days reconnecting with friends, getting to know their teachers and learning new classroom routines and expectations. As a staff, we have selected the anchor text, “The Power of One: Every Act of Kindness Counts” by Trudy Ludwig. Teachers will be taking up the learning around this text with students over the coming weeks as we start the school year together as a school community.

Our staff have already begun planning for excellent learning experiences for students within the new Grades 4-6 ELA-L (English Language Arts and Literature) and Mathematics Curriculum, K-3 Science Curriculum as well as a second year of implementation around the new Curriculum in Division One. Teachers have also begun planning off-site learning opportunities and planning residencies. We look forward to another year ahead!

A Warm Welcome to New Sibbald Staff

We welcome our new Learning Leader, Mrs. Alison Gardner, who is team teaching with Mrs. Kosior in Grade One. Mrs. Braelan Veltkamp has been hired in a temporary teaching position for the 2023-2024 school year to teach French as a Second Language in Grades 4 – 6. As a school, we were able to secure funding for this position through a government grant and we are excited by the passion that Madame Veltkamp brings around both French language and French culture. Madame Veltkamp will also be supporting Div Two students in other capacities. Lastly, we would like to welcome Mrs. Tania Khurram who is supporting our youngest learners in Kindergarten as our Early Childhood Practitioner.

Please see our website for a full list of our Sibbald Staff

A Note from Madame Veltkamp

Bienvenue and Welcome to French! I am Madame Veltkamp, and I am excited to be the new French Second Language teacher at Andrew Sibbald School. I will be joining the Grades 4-6 classes and working with teachers to explore topics such as family, community, and important vocabulary for everyday French conversation. I am excited to not only explore French, but also its importance to our families, our province, and the greater world around us. This year we will explore French language in new ways, including artistic projects and activities, and connecting with those in our school. I look forward to making student learning visible through my classroom blog and encourage you to reach out around any questions or concerns through email.

Meet the Teacher Conferences – September 21st and 22nd

We look forward to welcoming you to our Meet the Teacher Conferences on September 21st from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, September 22nd from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. To accommodate conferences, there is no school for kindergarten students on Thursday, September 21st and no school for K-6 students on Friday, September 22nd. Information will be communicated soon around booking your individual 15-minute conference through your MyCBE PowerSchool account.

Meet the Teacher Conferences allow an opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with their child’s teacher in the first few weeks of school and share parent perspective around their children’s academic and social development as well as share hopes and goals for the school year.

Volunteering at Andrew Sibbald

The CBE is revising documentation and processes related to volunteering and we will keep all parents and guardians informed as new information becomes available. Thank you for your patience. We appreciate our volunteers and look forward to welcoming parents back into the building to volunteer throughout the new school year.

Back-to-School Online Forms

Back-to-school forms, including Demographic Verification Forms for 2023-2024 are now available for completion in your MyCBE PowerSchool Account in the “School Engage” section.

Reporting Lates and Absences

Please email our school office at AndrewSibbald@cbe.ab.ca or call our school office at 403-777-6830 to leave a message if your child is ill, late or absent. Thank you in advance.

School Council Meeting – Wednesday, September 13th - All Parents Welcome

Parents & guardians, please join us for our school’s first Council Meeting (Annual General Meeting) on Wednesday, September 13th. All parents and guardians are members of the School Council and this is a great opportunity to become involved in our school community. The Parent Association is another group that parents may choose to participate in. The Parent Association’s membership supports the fundraising initiatives of our school.

School Council meetings are held in person in our school’s Learning Commons at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Parent Association meetings are held directly after the School Council meetings. Agendas are emailed to all parents and guardians before the meetings.

Final Monday Message for 2022-23

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

As we enter the final week of school, I’d like to extend a thank you to each one of you for all your support in your child’s learning along with the contributions you make on behalf of all students and staff here at Andrew Sibbald. It has been a year full of many celebrations for our school community. Andrew Sibbald is an amazing place to be! We wish you an awesome summer ahead and look forward to welcoming students back to school on August 31st. Our website will be updated with back-to-school information for your reference. Please note, our office closes on June 30th and reopens on August 28th

Farewell to 2022-2023 Staff

At this time, we’d like to say goodbye and thank you to some of our temporary teaching staff at Andrew Sibbald. Miss Seppala, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Prediger and Ms. Grant held temporary teaching contracts this year and we’d like to extend our sincerest well wishes to them, as they move on from Andrew Sibbald. We would also like to say farewell and thank you to Miss Jade, our Early Childhood Practitioner who supported in kindergarten this year. Mrs. Horne will be moving on from her position as School Assistant. Lastly, we’d like to congratulate Mrs. Halase on her retirement from the Calgary Board of Education.

Staffing continues throughout the summer months, and we look forward to sharing all teaching and support staff positions during the week of August 28th when schools reopen. Parents & guardians will receive an email from their children’s teacher welcoming them into their new classroom learning space.

Report Card Viewing

Online report cards will be enabled for viewing in your MyCBE PowerSchool Account from June 28, 2023 - July 28, 2023 (8 a.m.). Police Information Checks for Volunteers

Parents & Guardians, please consider completing your police clearance over the summer if yours expires soon or you would like to volunteer in the fall. Teachers are already organizing off-site learning experiences for September!

As an FYI, Calgary Police Service has secured a new vendor for processing Police Information Checks (PICs) effective Monday, June 26, 2023. During the transition, all PICs submitted between June 19 and 25 will have results mailed to applicants and will not be shared electronicallyIf you have your PIC mailed to you, please be sure to bring it to the school in September. Thank you!

Lost and Found Items

Parents, all items from the Lost and Found will be bagged up and donated on Thursday, June 29th

On Behalf of Council and Andrew Sibbald Parent Association:

Save the Date – Casino October 4th and 5th: We are asking parents and the community to save the date for our casino on October 4th and 5th 2023. The Casino provides the Andrew Sibbald Parents Association with at least $50 000 in funding that goes back into the school. This funding pays for things like chrome books, artists in residence, field trips, subscriptions, library books, home reading books, musical instruments and much much more. Without the casino funds, we are not able to provide the same level of enrichment to students of Andrew Sibbald. Please save the date and consider taking on a fun filed shift to help our school community out.

Summer Fundraising Opportunities

Please see the attached list of fundraising opportunities to support our school over the summer and throughout the year. These include: SkipTheDepot; Cobs in Willow Park & Mabel’s Labels.

Money generated by these programs and other fundraisers throughout the year pay for residencies, additional books and supplies, field trip transportation and more.

Thanks for your support. Have a great summer!

A Huge thank you to our Grade 6 students under the guidance of Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Drever for their work on bringing a Gaga ball Pit to the playground of Andrew Sibbald School We are so very pleased to announce that thanks to the efforts of six dads from our community, the assembly of the Gaga ball Pit is now complete, and it will be ready for students to use on Monday As well, we would like to once again thank the Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for their financial support of the Gaga ball Pit, as well as our student community for participating in the student fundraisers around this goal. This project will certainly serve the Andrew Sibbald School Community as well as the larger community of Lake Bonavista for years to come.

School Council Meeting – Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons

Please join us for our final meeting of the 2022-2023 school year this Wednesday in our school’s learning commons at 7:00 p.m. Thank you to all parents who have been able to participate in our School Council or Parent Association this year. We appreciate your support and engagement here at Sibbald!

Sports Day & Pancake Breakfast – Friday

Thank you to Ms. Hayes, Mrs. Swan and Mrs. Mitchell for organizing Sports Day for our Grades 1-6 students on Friday morning. We are looking forward to a ‘Stampede Themed’ pancake breakfast organized and funded by our Parent Association before we get the activities started. Students - don’t forget to wear your best stampede-themed attire that day!

Learning Grounds Clean Up & Thank you!

Thank you to the many families that came out last Saturday, June 3 to clean up our learning grounds We had multiple families out to rake leaves, trim dead branches and pull weeds from our Learning Grounds area. Roughly 30 bags of organic waste were removed from the Learning Grounds It sure has made a difference Thank you to everyone for their help to maintain this learning area for our students. Students use this area for both learning and play and we are grateful to be able to be able to do so!

Cycling to school

With the improved weather, we are seeing a significant increase in the number of students cycling to school. We are so pleased our students are choosing this method of getting to school.  Many of our students are doing an excellent job of navigating their way to school, watching for pedestrians and caring for their bikes Great work Andrew Sibbald!

We have a couple of reminders and tips for students:

  • There are two sets of bike racks There are 6 bike racks on the parking lot side of the school by the playground This has the greatest number of spots There are 2 bike racks on the west side of the school in the learning grounds Should you find limited space on this west side, please consider moving to the east side as there is far more room for bikes Please do not lock your bikes to the trees in the learning grounds.

  • All students are required to wear a helmet when riding a bike This is not a school rule; this is based on provincial regulations.

  • When locking up their bikes, students are reminded to lock their bikes with the lock passing through the frame of the bike.

We hope everyone continues to enjoy this incredible weather and stays active by walking and riding to school as often as they can!

Monday Message - June 5

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful weekend! It’s another busy and exciting week ahead at Sibbald. Our Grade Two students are off to the Zoo and our Grade Five & Six student patrols are off to Heritage Park to celebrate their year-long commitment to this act of service at our school. Thank you to all of the awesome patrols we had this year and to our teacher supervisors who have worked to schedule and supervise students throughout the year.

Grade Three Hatches Chicks!

Our Grade Three students were overjoyed to see the hatching of chicks in their classroom on Friday. This learning is a part of their life cycles Science curriculum and we are grateful that Ms. Braun and Ms. Swan have taken up this learning opportunity for students. The chicks will head back to Nanny McCluckins after their visit in Grade Three!

Grades 1-6 Sports Day & Pancake Breakfast

Thank you to Ms. Mitchell, Ms. Swan and Ms. Hayes for organizing our Sibbald Summer Games and Sports Day to take place during the week of June 12-16th. Staff and students look forward to a special pancake breakfast hosted by the Batter Boys on June 16th for Grades 1-6. We are grateful to the Andrew Sibbald Parent Association for covering the cost of this event so all Grades 1-6 students and staff can participate. Parents, more information about this will be emailed to you by your child’s teacher.

Professional Learning Day – Friday, June 9th

As a staff, we look forward to our final day of professional learning together which will focus around continuing to reflect on student evidence and learning data within mathematics, literacy (specifically reading instruction) and well-being from the current school year. Mr. Newman and I are incredibly proud of the staff for their engagement in professional learning this year, including uplifting our new K-3 New Curriculum in meaningful ways. Our professional learning communities held on Friday afternoons, along with our PD Days have supported our intended outcomes this year for both student learning and professional development. As we look ahead to next year and more new curriculum rollout, we are grateful to be able to make thoughtful decisions, and continue to work together in support of our students.

Congrats to all of our participants who either colored, cut or shaved their hair for the Big Brave event on Friday, May 26th. We would like to extend a thank you to all the community members, sponsors and Kids Cancer Care representatives who were able to come and join us. We are so moved by the generosity of the community around this event as well as the hard work of our students and their efforts put forth fundraising. We heard about lemonade stands, babysitting, doing chores and phoning family and friends to earn donations for The Big Brave. The total for this year was almost $75 000! Parents, guardians and family members, thank you for your support! And lastly, thank you to our staff who have inspired student participation, dedicated countless hours of organization, and for the passion that they brought to this legacy at Sibbald.

Monday Message - May 22

Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

We hope that you have enjoyed some excellent time together over the long weekend!

We will continue to follow the air quality guidelines for outdoor activities outlined here, as we are impacted by the wildfires in Alberta. Thank you to our whole school community for being flexible and responsive, and demonstrating empathy to those deeply impacted by the wildfires, including evacuees.

2023-2024 Kindergarten Orientation – Thursday Evening

We look forward to welcoming parents and children to our 'Welcome to Kindergarten' evening on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. inside our school gym. We will share information about kindergarten programming in the Calgary Board of Education and at Andrew Sibbald School and do a tour of the kindergarten classroom. Each family will also receive an envelope with valuable information included.

Big Brave Event – Friday Morning

Andrew Sibbald School Community – Wow! You are amazing. Well over half of our student population is participating in the 19th annual Big Brave Event and working to demonstrate their commitment to kids and families impacted by cancer. It has been inspiring to see the work that students, families, and community members are taking up to bring their brave this year! Thank you to Ms. Hatchette, Miss Craik, Mrs. Drever and Mr. Newman for leading the charge and organizing this event for our school community. And we wish to extend our sincerest thank you to you and your families for your support, as well as the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. We are so excited for this event which will take place on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. inside our gym. If you have not already, please check out the website here. Be ready to get inspired!

Congrats to Sibbald Students for Participation in the Mount Royal Math Contest

We are so proud of all our Grades 4-6 students who chose to participate in this year's Mount Royal Math Contest. Several of our students were honored last week for having made the top 25% of student scores from across the city. Way to represent, Sibbald students!

A Message from ASPA - Bottle Drive Fundraiser on Wednesday, May 24th

The bottle drive is this Wednesday! Parents are invited to bring donations to the school when they are dropping off and picking up their children. The staff parking lot will not be available for parking or drive-through use, during school hours. A table for collection will be at the main front doors before 8 am and again before 2:40pm. Then, from 3:30pm to 6pm, the Skip the Depot truck will be in the parking lot. At this time, anyone is welcome to drop their bottles off: parents, grandparents, friends, and the greater community. Let's make this a success and help the students in their goal of building the Gaga Ball Pit.

Thanks for your support,

Andrew Sibbald Parent Association

Reminder - Supervision begins at 7:50 a.m.

Parents, just a gentle reminder that student supervision and entry into the school begins at 7:50. We've noticed students coming to the playground quite early in the morning unsupervised to play. Please know we cannot be responsible for student safety prior to 7:50 and if students come to play before school, they must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Thank you for your understanding.

Update & Thank You - Student Fundraising Efforts for Outdoor Gaga Ball Pit

Thank you to all the students and parents who have helped support the Gr. 6 Gaga Ball Committee's fundraising efforts. It was truly appreciated. The students have successfully raised $1 500 dollars and met their contribution goal. We are also VERY grateful to the Parent Association and School Council for their support (both financial and encouragement) around this initiative. We will share out information around the building of the Gaga Ball Pit, as we work alongside CBE Facilities and timelines are established.
