December 2017
As we begin the month of December, we enter into a time noted for its celebration of peace, harmony and generosity. Throughout this festive season, we often consider how we can extend our sense of community to others. At Annie Gale, our staff and students have embarked on a challenge to raise food for others in need. We are asking our families to consider donating food for the Calgary Food Bank. This food drive runs from November 27th until December 15th. This drive will end with a “Pie in the Face” celebration at our school assembly on December 21st. Like last year, students will receive one ticket for every food donation they bring to school or for every dollar they donate. Tickets will then be placed into teacher bags for the chance to pie a teacher in the face at the assembly. Thanks to all teachers who have graciously agreed to be part of this incentive as well as the organizers at our school.

Music is an important part of the holiday season. Our annual celebration of the arts and winter concert is a great opportunity for our students to showcase the talents that they are developing through our school’s music program. We invite all our parents and guardians to join us for our Fine Arts Celebration occurring the evening of December 7th, beginning at 6:00 pm. Come to our school and enjoy the wonderful sounds of the holiday season while being entertained by our Grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 Bands. Also on display will be artefacts completed by our students in their Art and Construction classes.

At this time, we also wish to thank the many parents who have heeded our expectations around drop off and pick up requirements for students. Our school parking lot has become a much safer place for both staff and students with the continued attention to the posted signage. We would like to remind our families that this attention to safe and orderly drop off routines now needs to be extended to the streets adjacent to the school. Making U-turns and allowing students to get out of vehicles in the middle of the street is not safe. The buses that pick up our students on a regular basis also need access to the sidewalks for safe unloading and pick-up. Please consider our students safety during this holiday season.

We would also like to thank the many families who attended our Parent Teacher Conferences in November. Our report cards reflecting progress in the core discipline areas and complementary classes for the first term will be going home on January 22nd, 2018. That week, parents can also schedule another Parent Teacher Conferences during the evening of January 25th and the morning of January 26th. If you have any questions about the body of evidence teachers use to assess learning and the indicator scale used to identify learning proficiency levels, please feel free to join us at our School Council Meeting on December 18th beginning at 6:00 pm.

We also wish to remind our families that the last day of classes for students before the winter break is December 21st. There will be no school for students on December 8th, nor on December 22nd. Our Traditional Learning Community (TLC) Open House will be held on Thursday, January 11th beginning at 6:00 pm. The lottery for entry into this program begins on January 22nd.

At this time, we would like to wish all our families a safe and enjoyable holiday season and extend joyful tidings for the New Year. We hope that this winter break provides much opportunity for our students to spend time together, resting and relaxing with their family and friends. We look forward to continuing to work together to make a difference in our world in 2018.

As always, please feel free to contact me at cjreed@cbe.ab.ca  or 403 777 – 7860 if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations you would like to share.
