January 2018
Happy New Year! Welcome back to our school as we begin the second half of the year. We hope you all were able to have a safe and peaceful holiday with family and friends. 2018 looks to be another busy and exciting time at Annie Gale School.

As we ended the year, our band program, under the leadership of Mr. Osterreicher, presented a delightful showcase of the work our students had been taking up in class. Many remarked it was their best concert yet and were proud of the opportunities they had to show the growth they had made in playing their instruments this term. It is amazing to hear our musicians getting better and to see their confidence grow every time they have the opportunity to perform.

Jazz band students also performed at our “Pie in the Face” charity event assembly. This assembly acknowledged students who had been identified by their teachers for their diligence around the ‘integrity’ virtue. Students also donated both food and money to the Calgary Food Bank and, as a consequence of their donation, earned the chance to throw a pie in the face of staff members at Annie Gale. Thanks to Mrs. Hiscock and Mrs. Govind, in particular, for overseeing this event.

January is another busy month, full of opportunities for students at Annie Gale. Basketball try-outs begin for senior boys’ and girls’ teams, grades 8 and 9, as well as junior boys’ and girls’ teams, grades 6 and 7, in the first week back to school. Students should check the bulletin board by the gym for try-out dates and times. We also have a wrestling club starting up this month that will be meeting after school. Although this is not a competitive team, it is a great opportunity for interested students to learn the fundamentals of this sport. Thank you to the numerous teachers for volunteering their time for these PE clubs and teams.

Also this month a number of extra-curricular clubs are starting up and / or continuing from last term. These clubs include opportunities for students to learn about chess, poetry and coding, to name a few. Students are expected to listen to the daily announcements to find out details about where and when the clubs are offered. A list of all extra-curricular activities operating at the school between January and March will be posted on our website as well as throughout the school. Work session dates and times are also posted in various locations through the school. Teachers offer these sessions on a daily basis. Students are able to use these sessions to catch up on unfinished work and to get help from teachers if needed. Again, thank you to the many teachers who volunteer their time for these gatherings.

One event that students have been preparing for over the past term is the Calgary Science Fair. The first opportunity for the school to see the projects the students have been working on will be January 17th and 18th. Thanks to the coordination of this event by Mrs. Schultz, parents are also welcome to come to the school to see the work, if interested,. The AGS Science Fair displays will be open for viewing between10:15 am and 11:45 am on each of these days. The projects that are ultimately chosen to represent the school at the Calgary Science Fair in April will also be on display during our Parent Teacher Conferences.

On January 22nd, the first round of report cards will be sent home. These report cards are a culmination of a variety of assessments that have been occurring from September through to January. Teacher comments will be made for core subjects, results statements and option courses. Parents are invited to discuss their child’s report cards further at our conferences on the evening of Thursday, January 25th between 3:30 pm and 8:00 pm and the morning of January 26th between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm. IPPs will also be discussed at this time.

The Calgary Police Service continues to monitor the streets at entry and dismissal times. Please avoid parking in areas which block driveways or crosswalks and ensure that your child can safely get out of your car. Additionally dropping off or picking up students in school parking lots is prohibited. We have had numerous near misses in our parking lot this year. Please do not sacrifice other students’ safety for your child’s convenience.

Also application packages for students interested in our TLC program are now available in our office. Applications will be accepted beginning January 22nd until February 13th at noon. The lottery for this program will be held on February 14th. Details about this program will be posted on our website. Thank you to the many parents and families for their generosity this holiday season. We wish the best to you and your families in the New Year. I am excited to be continuing as the Acting Principal at Annie Gale.
