Staff and students are expected to maintain acceptable, distraction free, dress and grooming standards for a school environment, keeping modesty, safety and hygiene in mind. The school administration are given the authority to require any student not conforming to school dress or grooming standards, to return home and change before being admitted to class.

Students are expected to remove and store their jackets, their backpacks or other bags used to carry materials in their locker before classes commence. Heads and eyes are not to be partially or fully covered. Exceptions will be made for religious or medical reasons based on documentation given to the school.

Reasonable and Respectable

Students are required to adhere to reasonable and respectable standards in dressing and grooming. Clothing worn by staff and students needs to allow for distraction free and uninterrupted learning to occur between staff and students and among students. 

Several programs require specific clothing (construction, science labs, physical education classes, etc.); however, with these exceptions, casual clothing is appropriate for school.

The school dress policy includes, but is not limited to:

• Mid-thigh length shorts, skirts, skorts and dresses
• Neat and clean dressing
• Pants worn so underwear is not visible
• Tops and shirts long enough to reach the waistline of pants, shorts, skirts or dresses and high enough to cover the chest
• Shirts must have cap sleeves as a minimum
• Shoes with a maximum heel of 5 cm (for safety reasons)
• No head or eye covering (partial or full) except for religious or medical (doctor’s note required) reasons.

Examples of inappropriate dress include, but are not limited to:

• Accessories that look like weapons
• Accessories which could be used as a weapon like chains or spikes
• Clothing that is related to gangs or gang activity (e.g. bandanas, ICP clothing)
• Clothing with the FCUK (French Connection United Kingdom) logo or other inappropriate logos as deemed by administration
• Clothing with: inappropriate or negative language; symbols that condone or promote racism, violence, drugs, alcohol, sexually suggestive, violent, or aggressive behaviour; or obscene language or phrases
• Clothing, make-up, or props that are considered to be a costume
• Low slung pants showing underwear
• Muscle shirts, halter tops, strapless tops, sports bras, bathing suit tops
• Pyjama tops or bottoms
• Sheer clothing
• Shoes with heels higher than 5 cm or
• Shorts, skirts, skorts or dresses that are less than mid-thigh in length
• Tops that do not reach the waistline of pants, shorts, skirts or dresses

Dress Code for Physical Education

Students must change for P. E. class for two main reasons:

• Hygiene
• Identification

Our students wear Annie Gale School logo clothing to class. Students new to Annie Gale School or for those who have grown out of last year’s P.E. clothing, clothing will be available in September for student purchase. Those students unable to purchase clothing must make arrangements with their P.E. teacher to borrow from the school some gently used clean clothing.

For Physical Education class, students are expected to:

• Wear deodorant every day
• Wear Annie Gale School logo T-shirt and shorts (tights or leggings may be worn under the shorts)
• Wear proper footwear for physical activity, and
• Wash their PE clothing at least once a week
