Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices

Our primary purpose is learning and teaching. To that extent the use of cell phones, smart phones, and other communication devices in the building during instructional hours represents a distraction from the work we need to do. Therefore, we do not want to see communication devices in the school during instructional time, practices, or in clubs unless the teacher has directed its use. Students who have communication devices will be expected to keep them in their lockers during school time. 

Students who abuse this policy will have the communication device confiscated and returned at the end of the day for a first offence. For a second offence the parent/guardian will be required to pick up the device from the Main Office. The CBE Administrative Regulation 6014: Student Searches authorizes a teacher or principal who observes disruptive behaviour to immediately request that a student hand over an article… and present it to the teacher or principal.

Ideally, iPods and other listening devices should be left at home. However if an individual teacher warrants their use in their class students may bring the device but do so at their own risk. Students who have earphones visible in the hallway or who are listening to their iPod or other device will have it confiscated and handed into the office. The student may collect it after school.

Personal cameras and other electronic photographic devices may be used with permission from teachers as this may be related to school projects. There are, however, technology free zones – such as the bathrooms and the locker rooms. As per the Freedom of Information and Protection Privacy Act of Alberta, a person may not take pictures of others unless this person has given you their permission.

The school will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items that the student brings to school. It is the responsibility of the student to keep anything they bring to school secure.
