Vision

To Create an Exemplary Middle School for the 21st Century Learner

We have studied the work of AMLE (Association for Middle Level Education) and emphasize a project-based learning environment that is integrated, exploratory, challenging and relevant.

Although it may seem that we are a large middle  school of over 700 students, we strive to personalize learning for our learners by bringing together an instructional staff who are well-versed in teaching young adolescents. Within our school older and younger students work together during hallway or school projects and special events to create a sense of community. As a developmentally responsive middle-level school, we provide varied teaching and learning approaches including:

  • A homeroom structure that allows two core teachers (math/science and humanities) to spend a significant amount of time with their students in order to discover each student’s learning potential.
  • An opportunity to explore several options, from career and technology foundations to fine arts courses.
  • A range of clubs, athletics and co-curricular activities.
  • A culture of caring and respect.

We recognize that while our 21st century learners rely on information, media and technology skills, they also require skills in critical thinking/problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity/innovation. We provide access to current technology in the classroom and the integrated learning centre. We have incorporated information, media and technology skills in all subject areas. We encourage students to participate in their learning, build awareness of the curricular outcomes and communicate what they know in a variety of ways.

Arbour Lake School continues to build a culture that values the combined efforts of students, parents, staff and the community working together. It is only through our work together that we can create a positive learning community where students can experience personal success.

Our School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. In 2021, our school, along with all CBE schools made a TRC Commitment to Action. On June 21, 2022, we renewed our commitment, which can be found under Resources.

School Development Plan

Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report

Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
