Updates from Battalion Park School

Dear Families,It is no small feat that our students, parents and staff are managing as we try to keep our community safe during a global pandemic.  Thanks to everyone who has kept your child at home or who has come to pick them up if they have shown any symptoms.  Even if we suspect that the runny nose or the head ache might not be related to Covid19, we must all be very cautious and treat every situation seriously.  Here are a few reminders about how you can help us mitigate the risk of transferring Covid19 virus:- We ask adults who are picking up their children to mask up and physically distance from others- Continue to screen your child every day before school.  If the answer is Yes to any of the questions, please keep them home.  Covid19 Alberta Health Daily ChecklistTerry Fox Run – We are determined to celebrate the Terry Fox legacy next week in a safe and fun way.  Historically, our community has been an amazing supporter of this event and we hope that tradition continues.  Our staff have offered fun incentives or challenges that we will do for each increment of money that is fund raised.  We hope these fun incentives encourage more involvement.  To keep our students spread out and staying within their cohorts, we will get to run in our school’s Terry Fox run during Physical Education classes on Sept 29, Oct 1 or Oct 2.  On-line donations are our preferred method to collect for Terry Fox run.  This year is the 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and Battalion Park is proud to be continuing the legacy of one of our greatest heroes. Please join us and support this wonderful cause by donating to: Together, we can all make a difference.Orange Shirt Day – On Monday, Sept 21 we were honored to have all classrooms listen to a Skype message from saa’kokoto, a local Blackfoot elder.  Saa’kokoto talked to us about indigenous ways of knowing and understanding our world.  We learned about the importance of how history can be passed down through oral story telling traditions, changing of the seasons, and the importance of observing our local surroundings.  This introduction to First Nations, Metis, Inuit learning leads us nicely into a celebration of Orange Shirt Day, on Wednesday, Sept 30.  Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school.  This story is an opportunity for students and staff to reflect on history, legacy and implications, to discuss stories of survival and strength and to share ways we can work together toward truth and reconciliation.  We invite your child to dress in an orange shirt on Sept 30 in commemoration of this day.Noon supervision – students who stay for lunch must be registered.  If you have not already done so, please access Noon Supervision registration through Powerschool. No school tomorrow - Meet the Teacher Learning Conferences - As you know, there is no school tomorrow (Friday, Sept 25) due to Learning Conferences.Kind RegardsJ. Campbell
