Saying Thanks and Farewell

Dear Battalion Park School Families,

I think that in life we get to write our own headlines.  Our school year could be remembered as a year of Covid19, where world economies were battered and where classes for students were cancelled.  While this is a big event, it is certainly not the only headline.  In September 2019, 460 students started their school year at Battalion Park.  Some might think this is a boring story, but while going to school is common, the growth and development in the year of a child is not.  For some this was their first year of formal school.  For others, they came to BPS from near and far to join our school.  For all, it was a time to take another step forward in learning academics, independence, friendships, and confidence.  As we reflect on the school year, we encourage you to think about the young person that your child is becoming and how their school experiences help to forge that growth.

Our school staff remain grateful to you for your support and the trust you put in us each day to work with your child.  This support was felt on March 15, 2020 as we transformed our school to remote learning.  I would like to thank our teachers and education assistants for making this huge transition with little to no prior training or experiences – this was certainly a year of growth for everyone.

Next year will be a different year.  We hope that conditions in our society allow students to return to school and plans are well-underway to prepare for their arrival.  As you have heard, the government has presented three scenarios for return to school in September:

  • Scenario 1 - In-school classes resume (near normal with health measures)
  • Scenario 2 - In-school classes partially resume (with additional health measures)
  • Scenario 3 - At-home learning continues (in-school classes are suspended/cancelled)

Information about return to school will be sent to you from the Calgary Board of Education in August and then closer to the return date, please look for more specific plans directly from our school.

The following information is provided to you now to assist in planning for next year:

  1. The 2020/21 School Calendar is now posted on our website.
  2. August 1 - Alberta government has stated they will communicate plans for our return to school in September.
  3. Our school office is open on August 27.
  4. Families will receive a “Welcome to School” email from their child’s new teacher on August 28.  This email will include information on first day of school procedures.
  5. September 1 is the first day of school for students.
  6. Litterless lunch - Pack it in, pack it out! Students will bring home any garbage, compost or recycling in their lunchbox. Reusable containers are strongly encouraged. This allows supervisors to sanitize desks and classrooms more quickly and effectively. More info. to come.

This year we are saying good-bye to some students and staff as they move on to new schools and new experiences.  Please join me in thanking them for making our school a special place.  Remember, “once a Hawk, always a Hawk!”

From our staff to your family, we wish you a summer of peace, gratitude, and joy and we look forward to seeing you on September 1, 2020.

J. Campbell
