Hello Beddington Heights Families,
I hope you are all doing well. It has been such a treat to have true fall weather in Calgary and teachers have been able to get outside with students which is great for their learning. This week has been a busy one at BHS. Our Safety Patrols are looking awesome and doing a great job manning our crosswalk. I am very thankful to all parents who have been using the crosswalks to help teach all of our students how to be road safe.
Today we wrapped up Literacy Week at BHS. Literacy week included daily read alouds by the leadership team, daily reading buddies, a whole school created story, our book fair and many other activities. I have attached the following document that shares some easy ways you can help your child continue to develop as a strong reader at home. TipsForParentsReadingAtHome-1.pdf
On Wednesday, Mr. Shackelton read “If you give a pig a pancake…" for the whole school during our daily read aloud. As a follow up, our entire school worked together to write their own book titled “If you give a student a Beluga…". I have attached it here as it is definitely worth a read! A reminder that there is NO SCHOOL TOMORROW or MONDAY!
I have a few additional items to highlight:
Mr. Fisher is returning
Mr. Fisher will return from leave this coming Tuesday. Ms. Scharlach will be with us on Tuesday and Wednesday to support a smooth transition for students. Our students have been very fortunate during Mr. Fisher's absence to have such an amazing, competent and kind teacher fill in and she will be missed dearly.
Celebration of Learning Assembly
We have made some adjustments to our assemblies for the 2022-23 school year. Our assemblies will be a time for each grade team (once per year) to showcase and celebrate the learning they are engaging in. We encourage parents to join us for these Celebrations of Learning. Our first one will be next Friday, October 14th where our Grade 6's will be sharing their learning with the school from 8:30-9:00 am.
Our plan of how to recognize students showing various Pillars of Care is currently in the process of being revamped. We will not be including them as part of our monthly assemblies, but are in the process of discussing as a school how we can continue to recognize students who show care for self, others and place in an authentic and meaningful way. Once we have developed a plan, I will be sharing this with families via my weekly updates. I hope to have this information to you within the next couple of weeks.
Terry Fox
Thank you to everyone who donated money to the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research. As a community, we raised a whopping $2359.47. You all are simply amazing!
Winter and Spring Concerts
As we move back into more normal times following covid, we are looking forward to our winter and spring concerts. For the 22-23 school year, students will all have the opportunity to perform for their families in one of our two concerts.
Our Kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 students will perform for their families at our Winter Concert on December 8th (there will be a daytime and evening performance). This performance will be a showcase of the skills they have been working on in music throughout the year presented through a winter theme.
Our grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 students will perform for their families at our Spring Concert on May 4th (daytime and evening performances). This again, will be an opportunity for them to showcase a year's worth of music learning through a spring theme.
We are looking forward to sharing the amazing things that are happening in our music program with you all!
I wish each of you a great extra-long weekend, and as always, if I can be of service, please do not hesitate to contact me at saross@cbe.ab.ca.
Take care,
Steve Ross
