Responsible Use of Electronic Information & Resources

Students at Belfast School are expected to follow the CBE's Administrative Regulation 1062 – Responsible Use of Electronic Information Resources at all times when using CBE equipment or servers.

The CBE filtering system will be active at all times when using the CBE networks. This policy will be reviewed with every student in classrooms and a copy will be sent home with each student. The privilege to use devices and networks is dependent on the level of responsibility shown by individual students. It is our intent to have all students access these tools for learning on an on-going basis. The following acts and prohibited sites constitute inappropriate use and may endanger students, and/or possibly damage the network, hardware, and/or software. at all times when using CBE equipment or servers. 

Prohibited Acts Include:

  • Use of someone else’s CBE account or access to network
  • Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
  • Using obscene language
  • Harassing, insulting or attacking another person or their reputation
  • Trespassing in other people’s folders, work or files
  • Accessing, posting, sending or downloading of inappropriate material
  • Assuming the identity of another person to gain information
  • Viewing web pages through a proxy server
  • Running an application/program from a memory stick/jump drive
  • Any attempt and/or threats to harm a person
  • Plagiarism of online content
  • Posting, publishing, circulating or distributing personal information about oneself or others without the supervision and consent of a staff member
  • Sharing of usernames and passwords
  • Use of technology or the network to access sites or software not approved by staff

Prohibited Sites Include:

  • Vulgar or lewd depiction of the human body
  • Any content publicly labelled for adults
  • Violent acts
  • On-line gambling/gaming
  • Sites that encourage the use of illicit or illegal drugs, tobacco, or alcohol
  • Sites advocating violence or hatred against an identifiable group. ie. race, religion, gender, disabilities, age, colour, sexual orientation, etc.
  • Sites promoting criminal activity

Violation of the CBE Policy

Each situation is dealt with on an individual basis and breach of policy may result in:

  • Restriction or loss of use of Wi-Fi devices
  • School based disciplinary consequences; and/or     
  • Police intervention and/or legal action 

Personal Technology Devices / Use During School

The expectation for students who have cell phones / iPods / tablets is to keep them in their backpacks upon arrival time till dismissal. To note: Technology is PROHIBITED in public washrooms as per the CBE.  

Students caught with Technology during school hours: 

  • Device will be confiscation from student 

  • Device will be housed in the office 

  • Device will ONLY be returned to a Parent /Guardian

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
