Illness & Medical

It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-6020. See more on our Attendance page.

Accidents

In case of an emergency, it is very important that the school have phone numbers where parents can be reached. Please ensure we also have the name and phone number of an alternate person to be contacted if a parent cannot be reached. Please ensure that we have a record of these contacts in the office.

Allergies

Nut allergies are present in our school as are other food allergies. Teachers are well informed about the needs of students in their classrooms. Please check with them before sending anything for the class to the school.

Please know, Bowcroft School is an,”allergy aware” school. Keeping students and staff from a variety of allergens is a shared responsibility of students, staff and parents.

Students, taking into account their individual abilities are responsible for developing skills at managing their personal allergy awareness. This is often accomplished by simply not sharing foods with others and asking, “Does this contain _____________?”

Staff are responsible for being aware of allergy information provided to the school by parents. Staff will make reasonable accommodations for students with allergies. The school does not ban particular foods from the school. If you have specific questions about our allergy procedures please contact your child’s teacher for classroom questions and the main office for  lunchroom or school-wide concerns.

Dogs are not permitted on school property (even when leashed) unless they are here for instructional purposes, pre-arranged through the teacher, so that allergy precautions may be taken if needed.

Illness

At School

Children who are not feeling well should be kept home from school as it is extremely difficult for them to engage in their work. They may also pass their illness on to other children or staff members and create further absences. Remember to contact the school to report your child's absence (Absence Line 403-777-6020). Children who become ill at school will be taken to the infirmary and, if they are too ill to return to class, a parent will be notified. A child is never sent home alone. Please instruct your children that if they are sick or hurt they should inform their teacher or the office. See more about illness absences on our Attendance page.

Returning from an Illness

Parents are asked to ensure that students are feeling well before returning to school. If a child must stay indoors, a dated note must be sent with the child indicating the reason and duration.

Medications

If your child has significant medical concerns, please let the teacher and the office know. When medication must be taken at school, a Student Health Plan Form must be completed by parents and kept in the office for reference. Medication must come to school in the original pharmacy container and be clearly marked with the child’s name and teacher. Vitamins, cough drops and other medication that could be taken outside school hours will not be administered at school.
