The School Act defines an Independent Student as 18 years of age or older, regardless of where they live. Once a student becomes an Independent Student, he or she will have all the rights, powers and benefits and be subject to obligations as set out in the School Act.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act) of Alberta requires the CBE to disclose information to students who are the age of majority and then only to others with the written consent of the Independent Student.

Independent Students may elect to provide written consent to share access to information with their parent/guardian(s). This is done by having the Independent Student complete the Release of Independent Student Information form, which is available at our school office. This form allows the school to continue to share student information with the parent/guardian on matters such as report cards, attendance records, field trip details, suspension matters, course options, etc.
