Principal's Message

November 2020

Good afternoon Buffalo Rubbing Stone families,
I hope you're feeling rested following our annual extra hour of sleep when returning to standard time.  It's nice having a little extra daylight to see everyone's faces each morning!
As I think back on October, there's much to celebrate.  The weekly highlights from teachers shine a light on the important learning students are addressing in school.  A big part of our work has been determining student strengths and learning needs.  Teachers have used their assessment data and observations to identify the focus of our School Development Plan.  Mrs. Neufeld and I shared the introductory work with the school council a few weeks ago.  Thank you to the parents who attended the meeting and provided some feedback.  We will continue fine-tuning our plan over the next few weeks; it will be posted on our BRS website at the end of November.  Central to our work will be developing confidence and persistence in learning and organizing student thinking to improve writing.  We will also be focussing on complex problem solving in math.
Our Buffalo Rubbing Stone School Council (BRSSC) is busy planning this year's selection of spirit wear.  The product list includes t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, sweat pants, and masks printed with our BRS logo.  Expect an online order link in the Buffalo Bulletin later this week.  To receive information about ordering spirit wear, please be certain you subscribe for commercial messages.  Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) prohibits us from sending commercial messages without your subscription.  Thanks so much to the school council and the sub-committee of parents working to increase our sense of community with spirit wear!
Mr. Blais has been teaching at BRS since the school opened.  He has been appointed to a new role, Learning Technology Specialist, so he will be leaving BRS at the end of this week.  It's always hard to say goodbye; we will miss him.  Ms. Gill has been appointed as our new grade four hub teacher.  She will spend some time with the class later this week and will officially begin her teaching assignment on November 9th.
School assemblies remain an important part of the way we celebrate in community and share our learning.  On November 10th, we will host our annual Remembrance Day observance connecting our classrooms within the school electronically, as we did for Halloween.  Hub students will be part of the assembly in their Google classroom.  We do not have a way to include parents in this very important tradition.  We look forward to the opportunity to have everyone together in the gym, whenever that might be.
Last year, we were unable to have class photos taken due to class closure.  LifeTouch graciously produced class composite photos that will be distributed later this week or early next week.  Remember, individual photo retakes are tomorrow.  Please send a note or return the proofs indicating you want your child to have a retake.
That's all for now.  We're looking forward to a great month and planning to maximize the beautiful weather with lots of outdoor learning.
Take good care,
Allison E.G. Bobenic
Principal
