Good afternoon Buffalo Rubbing Stone families and Happy New Year,

By now all students will have completed their first day back to school while learning at home.  Teachers have prepared engaging learning tasks for students to complete both online and offline.  They are working hard to make the at home learning experience very worthwhile.  Age-appropriate independent work will be a focus as students set learning goals and work to achieve them.  If your child is having difficulty accessing the Google Meets, please email the teacher directly.  Attendance is taken during Google Meets; children not in attendance will be marked absent.  Please contact the school, as you usually would, if your child is ill and unable to attend school.

As we near the half-way point in the year, it is a good time to reflect on where we began, how far we've come, and the work we need to do to achieve our goals by the end of June.  Teachers are assessing the progress students have made since September and collecting evidence of learning to determine report card marks and comments.  Expect report cards to be issued on your MyCBE/PowerSchool account during the first week of February.

The Minister of Education confirmed on Monday afternoon that it is expected K-12 students who typically learn at school will return to in-person learning on January 11.  Students and families who have travelled outside Canada are legally required to follow all provincial and federal travel restrictions upon arrival.  If your family is participating in the International Border Testing Pilot Program, your children may not return to school until they have tested negative on a second test 6 or 7 days after your arrival.

If you are not enrolled in the pilot program, your child must: quarantine (isolate) for 14 days, monitor for symptoms, and get tested if any symptoms develop, then isolate for at least 10 additional days from the beginning of symptoms or until feeling well, whichever takes longer.  This means your child is unable to return to school for a minimum of 14 days after your return.

Kindergarten Registration begins on Monday, January 11.  At BRS, our kindergarten program serves only the students in our catchment.  Typically, our morning classes are oversubscribed necessitating a draw.  Registration in kindergarten is NOT first come first served.  If either the morning or afternoon classes are oversubscribed, complete registrations received on or before noon on February 9 will be included in the draw on February 10.  Families will be notified of their AM or PM designation by email on or before February 26.  If there are little ones in your neighbourhood ready to begin kindergarten in the fall, please have their parents go to our BRS website for the information and forms they need to register.

Thank you again to the BRS School Council for organizing spirit wear.  Hoodies, t-shirts, masks, ball caps, and sweat pants were delivered to families during the week of December 14.  On Fridays in January and February, we are going to show our school spirit by wearing our spirit wear or school colours as follows:

  • January 15 – yellow or BRS spirit wear
  • January 22 – red or BRS spirit wear
  • February 5 – black or BRS spirit wear
  • February 19 – white or BRS spirit wear
  • February 26 – yellow, red, black, white or BRS spirit wear

If you haven't yet had the opportunity to participate in our Winter Art Walk around the exterior of the school, the art is still on the windows for you to enjoy.  Be sure to collect the letter clues in each window to solve the puzzle!

Have a great week of learning at home.  We miss you and look forward to seeing everyone on January 11!

Take good care,

Allison E.G. Bobenic
