Automotive Service Technician

Overview

Interested in pursuing mechanics as a career? Get a head start on your apprenticeship technical training! The Dual Credit Automotive Service Technician program offers students the opportunity to get a head start on a career as an automotive service technician. The program provides them with the chance to earn 15 ASA credits in CTS that count towards an Alberta High School Diploma and your Automotive Technician certification. At the completion of the program students will write their first period AST apprenticeship exam. The program is open to students from all high schools. The course runs over the full school year (one period during the first semester and two periods in second semester).

  • 15 ASA Credits & High School credits

Student Requirements

Students are required to have completed at least the intermediate level of mechanics but related experience may be considered. They must also have completed a minimum of English 20-2, Math 20-3 and Science 10.

Program Delivery

The program is split between the classroom and the shop. As this course prepares students for their apprenticeship exam, there is a strong focus on the technical aspects of the trade.  Students will work with the teacher through the individual learning modules from Alberta Industry and Training during the classroom portion.  Students will then apply their skills and expand their understanding through hands on work in the shop. This work consists of labs and customer work completed under the supervision of a Red Seal Journeyman technician as well as a shop technician. Depending on demands in the shop, students may have the opportunity to complete repairs and maintenance on their own vehicles. Students will have an opportunity to gain experience working on steering, suspension, brake, and electrical systems just to name a few.

Supplies

The following items are covered in class fees:

  • Safety Glasses
  • Individual Learning Modules
  • Coveralls
  • Gloves
  • Specialized personal protective equipment as required in the shop (ie. Dust mask, hearing protection)
  • Shop materials

Steel-toed boots are not required but highly recommended and are not included.
