Health & Wellness at the CBE

At the CBE, we believe in a whole school approach to health and wellness. We call this our Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach. CSH is about healthy eating, active living, supportive social environments and positive mental health. As a system, we focus on the following four areas: healthy eating; healthy relationships; physical activity; and positive mental health. Each school creates its own approach and goals for health and wellness.

Breakfast, Snacks & Lunch

As many children are away from home for long periods of the day, eating a solid breakfast and bringing sufficient food for snack and lunch is important for optimal learning. Our staff strongly promotes healthy food choices particularly foods which are non-processed, low sugar, low fat, and reflect the four food groups. In strong support of the Alberta Health Services guidelines, food and beverages served by CBE staff must fit the "Choose Most Often" category. As defined by Alberta Nutritional Guidelines, this indicates food and beverage choices which are high in nutrients. Water is recommended as the first option to quench thirst and satisfy hydration.

Birthday Treats Best Left at Home

We recognize that all children are unique, precious gifts to our world, and acknowledge every child’s birthday as a special day. To ensure safety of all students, respect children’s dietary options / restrictions, allergies, Canadian Food Recalls, and maximize instructional time please avoid sending food items such as cake, cupcakes, etc. to school on a child’s
birthday.
