International Spanish Academy
¿Quiénes somos? Our school is an International
Spanish Academy! The International Spanish Academy program is an educational
initiative of the Ministry of Education of Spain that complements the Calgary
Board of Education's vibrant Spanish Bilingual Program by connecting schools
from across Alberta and the United States. It provides students with
opportunities to acquire and maintain language skills in Spanish and English and
develop global citizenship through rich intercultural encounters.

Spanish & English Instruction
At Escuela Canyon Meadows, Spanish and English are heard throughout our hallways and the playground. With 50% of instruction occurring in Spanish, our students reap the benefits of working with a culturally diverse staff who come to our school from around the world. In addition, our students engage in authentic learning experiences while celebrating the Hispanic culture.
The staff at Escuela Canyon Meadows is committed to ensure all students have access to a quality education. Making learning relevant and meaningful is a primary goal at Escuela Canyon Meadows. Using an interdisciplinary inquiry-based approach to learning, students and teachers embark upon journeys of discovery each day, exploring answers to their questions and delving into topics that sponsor critical thinking. We believe in a strong literacy and numeracy program as the foundation for life-long learning. Our youth will have opportunities to influence and shape our world. Each day at Escuela Canyon Meadows our staff connects students to the big world outside our doors through meaningful learning experiences.
Our school provides a supportive environment by encouraging teamwork and collaboration of all staff members. Classes of students work together on a regular basis, allowing for flexible groupings based on student learning needs. Many classes also work with buddies at other grade levels. Escuela Canyon Meadows has a strong partnership with the Leadership Program and the Spanish Bilingual Program of Dr. E.P Scarlett High School.
Homework
Extensions of school learning are meant to be non-stressful and promote positive parent-child relationships. Five to 10 minutes of reading per night is recommended. Informal, voluntary home reading programs support parents in enhancing literacy at home. We provide access to the RazKids website for all of our students in order to support home reading in Spanish and in English. You may contact your child's teacher for more information on this exciting literacy-support tool. Parents may also access Bookflix through www.learnalberta.ca using username: LA06 and password: 4105. Bookflix is an online English / Spanish resource.
Students may be given formal assignments at the discretion of the teacher, but no school requirement should exceed 20 minutes in length. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss and comment upon recent events in the news. Parent signing of the agenda is daily homework for all students.
