Who Was Cappy Smart?
The school was named after James "Cappy" Smart. He was born in Dundee, Scotland on July 12, 1865. At age 18 he came to Canada, settling in Calgary on October 19, 1883. In 1885 he began his long association with the fire department. On Dec. 1, 1894, he was elected secretary of the fire department, became assistant chief on Jan. 23, 1898, and two months later he was named chief. He held this post for 35 years, from March 21, 1898 to March 1933.
When he retired, he had completed 48 years of service with the fire department. He was instrumental in organizing the first May 24 sports day, an event that continued for many years. He was interested in all kinds of sports and was official timekeeper at all major sporting events over a span of more than 40 years. Cappy Smart also served as the Parade Marshall for the Calgary Stampede for many years. Chief James "Cappy" Smart died on July 25, 1939.
