Expectations of Students
Staff, students and parents are encouraged to work together to ensure that respect, responsibility and reasonableness form the foundation of a school environment which promotes self-discipline and positive self-concept.
Discipline begins at home. Parent support is vital. We require parent involvement. While each student has a “right” to an education, this comes with certain responsibilities. Each student must respect the rights of other students and staff. When a student interferes with the rights of others, either physically or psychologically, discipline procedures are enforced.
Students are expected:
- To come to school on time, well rested and ready to learn.
- To be considerate of one another, staff and other adults - on the playground, in the school, and at school sponsored events.
- To demonstrate respect and care for articles belonging to self, school, and others.
- To know and follow school based rules and the specific classroom routines and expectations that are established by teachers with the students in each class.
- To resolve differences through a problem solving approach, without physical violence or abusive language.
- To demonstrate a tolerance for subjects and activities which are not their primary interest for the benefit of all class members.
- To take responsibility for their learning; and ask teachers/support staff for clarification or assistance with assignments as needed.
- To take home materials and return completed work on time.
Problem Solving
We realize that an individual child‟s response to the above expectations will vary. Some children will require additional assistance to meet their responsibilities as citizens of Cedarbrae School. Part of growing up is making mistakes. Our goal is for students to learn from their mistakes and be empowered to meet future challenges.
Consequences
Wherever possible, natural consequences will be implemented. There is a wide range of possible consequences, depending on the individual child and the circumstances. The usual steps are as follows:
- The student(s) meet with a staff member to solve the problem, consider the consequences of their behavior and establish a plan for restitution.
- If situations reoccur, the teacher involves the parent and/or principal to help solve the problem.
- Unsafe activity is directed immediately to the principal where the same problem solving steps are carefully considered and implemented.
Repetitive, unsafe or otherwise serious misbehavior may result in student suspension. Parents will be notified immediately should suspension become necessary.
