May is Asian Heritage Month

Since the late 1700s, people of Asian descent have made important contributions to Canada's history and identity. In 2002, the Government of Canada officially recognized the month of May as Asian Heritage Month, a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions that Canadians of Asian descent have made and continue to make, to the growth and prosperity of Canada (Source: Canada.ca).

Appropriate Clothing for School

With the warmer weather this week, we noticed many of our students wearing clothing that is better suited for a summer day at the park or the beach, rather than at school. We would like to remind students that the way we dress for school should be comfortable but also appropriate for a “work-like” environment.

In addition to this, we recognize that Cos-Play was here last weekend; however, we are asking that students not wear costumes to school on a regular basis as they are distracting to the learning environment. We have a variety of Spirit Days, etc., that costumes would be welcome and ask students to choose these days for their creative expression, following the theme of each Spirit Day. Thank you for your support.

Toys and Sports Equipment at School

We are noticing more personal toys and trading cards coming to school lately. Inevitably, something gets lost, broken or taken. When students “trade” cards, there is usually someone who is unhappy with the trade. For these reasons, we ask that toys and trading cards stay at home. We are not able to navigate these difficulties on a regular and continuous basis.
This includes sports equipment for recess and lunch. Mr. Van Roekel has set up an equipment sign-out for students to use school equipment. We ask students to choose this option so that all personal items are kept safe and there is equal access to all games.

Next Meeting

Our next School Council Meeting is Thursday, May 11 at 6:30pm in the Music Room. Kindergarten teachers will be presenting.

Fun Lunch – Boston Pizza is May 18.

Our Fun Lunch is Boston Pizza. It can be ordered at Healthy Hunger. The last day to order is Saturday, May 13. It is also our Spirit Day. The Gr 4s survey has us hosting Game Day. For Game Day, students are welcome to bring a game or puzzle that they can play with their friends at specified times during the day. The times that this happens, will be scheduled by each teacher to accommodate the individual schedules of each class.

Casino Fundraiser

The casino fundraiser is the biggest fundraiser we do at Chaparral School. It regularly brings in more than $60,000 to support purchases to enhance student learning. It requires many volunteers over a 2-day period. Our next casino is June 24 & 25 at Deerfoot Inn & Casino. There is a variety of roles to choose from and you do not need to have a police clearance to volunteer. If you can support, please sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/ACA388085
