Principal's Message

October 2020 Update

Dear CJM Families & Friends,
It is hard to believe that we have been at school for five weeks already!
On September 24th and 25th, we had our first Meet the Teacher by phone. It was wonderful to see so many phone calls booked with the teachers K-6. Parent and/or guardian input is critical when making educational programming decisions and we would love to have every family connect with their child's teacher. If you were unable to book a phone call or connect with your child's teacher, please email the teacher directly and set up a time as soon as possible.
On Google Classroom teachers will post a message, pictures and other important information at the end of each week to provide families with an update of the learning in the classroom. We will continue to use School Messenger to communicate school-wide information. We have started to send out our CJM News through the School Messenger monthly. Additionally, please check the school website for important updates.
Homework (AR 3066)
“The Calgary Board of Education is desirous of promoting the development of good study habits. It believes that home study can contribute to this objective as well as to the reinforcement of learning. Two kinds of study are recognized, the completion of written or "hand-in" assignments, and the informal study of material related to the subjects under study in school. While the Board is anxious to promote the supportive role of the home in the child's education, it is anxious at the same time not to interfere with the child's pursuit of other wholesome non-school interests of educational, cultural, or recreational value.
The assignment of formal exercises for completion is the prerogative of the teacher, but every encouragement shall be given to pupils (and parents) to set aside some regular time each evening for home study.
The nature and amounts of home study recommended are as follows:
A. Division I: The motivation which comes from parental interest in children's school work can be valuable to a child. Parents and teachers should encourage children to read from books suggested by the school. Pressures can bring about negative results. No formal assignments shall be made, but from 5 to 10 minutes of systematic study per night is recommended.
B. Division II: Formal assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher, particularly for pupils who need special attention or help, but in general, assignments should be of the reading or study type. Parents should be made aware of the teacher's general requirements with respect to home study, and the Board's expectations as set forth in section above, but no school requirement should exceed 20 minutes in length."
CJM teachers will be using Epic as the preferred Home Reading Program and supplemented through hard copy books from our Learning Commons and Guided Reading material.
Parent Council Meeting, Wednesday September 30 @ 6pm
Due to Covid-19 we are not able to offer in person meetings at this time. For our first council meeting, we will meet virtually on Google Meet. To attend on September 30th at 6:00pm, you will need to go to Once there, you will click “Join or start a meeting" Enter in the code: cjmschoolcouncil
Every parent or guardian is welcome to participate, whether that is taking on an important role or simply listening and sharing your voice. For the 2020-21 school year there are several key roles that we NEED filled in order for this important aspect of our school community to effectively run. We look forward to seeing you there!
Mask Care
How often should you clean your face mask or covering? You should clean your mask after every wearing. This reduces the risk of spreading the coronavirus or other germs.
Bandanas, face scarves and masks made of fabric, such as cotton, can be washed in your regular laundry using hot water.
Disposable, blue surgical masks cannot be laundered or cleaned and should be thrown away when it is visibly soiled or damaged.
After laundering your fabric masks, tumble dry them in the dryer on a high setting.
You might consider using a non-scented laundry detergent if you are sensitive to perfumes so it is easier to wear the masks.
You can also hand wash your mask, using hot, soapy water. Scrub the mask for at least 20 seconds, and dry them on high heat in the dryer.
Store clean masks in a clean place when you are not using them.We are optimistic with how well the students are learning and adhering to the safety protocols. They arrived with excitement and anticipation and this has renewed our passion as their teachers.  Over the next few weeks, we will review and reflect on what is going well and what we might revise to best support our students. We are here to support you should any questions or concerns arise; please feel free to call or email the school.  We are all in this together! Sincerely,Ms. Bains, Principal & Ms. Harder, Assistant Principal
