February 2021 Message

We have had a great first month of 2021! We were spoiled with great weather for most of January, but the last week really changed. Please remember to have your children dress appropriately for the weather.

February will be a busy month. The virtue for the month is Trustworthiness and we will be celebrating this virtue at our monthly online assembly on February 26.

Please read below to know of all events and information.

HUB - HUB online learning has been very successful in Term 1. As you know, families participating in online learning were given a choice on whether to stay in HUB or change to in-class learning. At Chris Akkerman, 52 students will be returning to in-class learning beginning February 1. These students will be transitioned into our existing classes and will be contacted by the homeroom teacher this week. We look forward to seeing them when they arrive!

Report Cards - Teachers have been working hard and have completed report cards. As previously mentioned, report cards are only available online through PowerSchool and are being released in phases. Chris Akkerman report cards will be available on February 5. Please print off a copy if you would like a paper copy. No paper copies available at the school.

Registration - Registration for new students ends on February 9 and our lottery will be held on February 10. New families will be contacted at the beginning of March to say whether they have been accepted or placed on the waitlist. All information on how to register is on our main page on the website.

School Council - We had a successful meeting on January 25. Our next meeting is on February 22 @ 6:00 pm on Microsoft Teams and we encourage all parents to participate.

Valentines Day - With the current situation, Valentine's Day will be celebrated differently this year. We will not be handing out paper valentines, instead teachers will be celebrating it digitally and will provide information to parents about how this will work in the classroom. Teachers will hold small celebrations in their classrooms on February 10. We ask that no food be brought in. February 10 is also crazy hair/red and white day. Students can wear casual red and white clothing and have fun with their hairstyles.

Parking - A specific email and letter was sent out to parents regarding parking after school. While it is convenient, it is unsafe to park in the alley by the parking lot and playground to pick up your child. Please respect the no parking/stopping signs posted in the alley by the playground. No parents should be parking along the wooden fence in the alley, or near the garages or homes on the other side. We need those areas clear for our buses and for residents. Thank you for your cooperation.

Thank you so much for everything you do to support our school and students. Chris Akkerman truly is an amazing place to work and learn.

Derek Siakaluk, Principal

Debbie Bauman, Assistant Principal
