September 2021 Message

Hello Chris Akkerman Families!

We are one week in and it's been a very busy, yet exciting week. Our classes are full and we have 640 learners with us this year. All of our staff has been working hard to ensure all students feel welcome and are excited about their learning. Amazing things will happen this year! Our school theme is 'Say Something' and we are using this text by Peter Reynolds to inspire and motivate all students so they can change the world for the better. Please ask your children about this story as it is a large focus for us throughout the year.

Because we have so many students, one of our main concerns continues to be with safety in drop off and pick up. After school is a very busy time and we need to make sure we are following all traffic rules, using the crosswalk and not walking in front of the yellow school buses. Also, a reminder that there is no parking in our school parking lot, or the alley by the parking lot and playground. The alley is reserved for school buses only.

We are excited for our learning commons to open up for book exchange. That should start this week so your children will have great books to bring home and read with you.

There will be many forms coming home over the next few days. These forms are very important for us at the office to ensure up to date contact information. Please complete the forms and return them with your child.

Some important information and dates are below:

September 17 - Terry Fox Run - students can wear casual, sporty clothing to participate in the run. We will be doing the run outside on our field and students will stay in their cohorts.

September 23/24 - Conferences - these will once again be online and booking begins September 20 @ 7:00 am. The purpose of these conferences is for you to meet the teacher and share any important information with them. You play a critical role in your child's education and we truly appreciate the support. Kindergarten conferences are September 23 from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm and September 24 from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. Grades 1-5 conferences are September 23 from 3:30 - 7:30 pm and September 24 from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm.

September 27 @ 6:00 pm - This will be our first School Council meeting and they will continue to be virtual. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend. Please stay tuned for more information.

September 30 - National Day of Truth and Reconciliation - there is no school this day to allow families to honour this important day. At Akkerman, we are finding more opportunities to learn on the land and to enhance our understanding of the Acknowledgement of the Land. Students will have an opportunity to create their own acknowledgements during their virtue assemblies.

October 1 - First Virtual Virtue Assembly

We want to truly thank you all for your support and kindness at Akkerman. We are a wonderful learning community and are exited for what the year has to bring. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at the main office.

Thank you,

Derek Siakaluk, Principal
