Hello Chris Akkerman Families,
We had a wonderful, busy and exciting September and are excited to see what October will bring us. So far, the weather has been gorgeous and we are all enjoying the Fall colours. Things will definitely cool off so please remember to have your children dress appropriately for the weather. Time to start digging out those winter coats, gloves and hats!
Student Safety - We had our first fire drill in September and this month we will have a lockdown practice. Teachers will review the protocols with the students so they know what to expect. These drills are critical to ensure the safety of all students in any situation. We are also concerned with safety before and after school. Please remember to follow the laws and rules. No parking in the alley and please use the crosswalk. Jay walking is extremely dangerous and we want to make sure everyone gets home safely.
School Council - Thank you to everyone who came to our online Council meeting last week. We have filled all positions and continue to encourage all parents to attend when they can. Our next meeting is on Monday, October 25 @ 6:30 pm on Teams. A link will be sent out prior to the meeting.
Professional Learning - We have two professional learning days for staff this month. The first is on October 8 where teachers will be working on our goals towards our School Development Plan. We will spend the day focused on our guided reading practice and learning about specific strategies to use with all students to improve literacy skills. The other day is on October 18 and we will focus on better understanding the Teacher Quality Standards around Indigenous learning to ensure we, as educators, are meeting these standards. There is no school for students on these days.
Virtue Assembly - Each month we study and focus on a virtue that improves our character. This month we are looking at Justice and how we can be just individuals. The Grade 1 classes will present a virtual assembly on October 29. We will also recognize students of the month during this time as well. Looking forward to it!
Thank you to everyone for your support, cooperation and kindness. We continue to meet health measures and follow covid protocols and we know many people are tiring of this. Our main goal is to ensure all students are safe, so thank you for continuing to send masks with your children each day and emphasizing the importance of distancing and hand sanitizing.
Have a great month and a great holiday weekend next week.
