January School Council Meeting
Dear CAS Families
On Thursday evening we hosted the first Microsoft TEAMS on-line School Council/ Parent Association meeting of the 2022-23 school year. Turn out from parents was great – we had 20 parents in attendance and 4 staff members present. While attendance at an on-line meeting is easier at times, and our next meeting is planned for in person, it was still great to see so many families in attendance. We are hopeful the number in attendance only increases. We are so pleased with the families who consistently come to the meetings and are thrilled to see so many new families. We continue to encourage all families to join us in these very important meetings.
School council approved funding for Carnival in the late winter, they also approved funds for a scanner in the Learning Commons so students will be able to check out and return their own books. The group present also had a great conversation about attendance, staff and student wellness and what is best for our students when it is so cold and they still need exercise and fresh air. One of the most important roles of school council is to work with the school leadership on funding purchases that will enhance the educational experience for all of our students and also discussing and problem-solving complex problems that fall outside of the teaching and learning piece but are still so important to the daily success of all our students. The school is grateful for the insight and perspective our school council is able to share to assist us in making great decisions for our learners.
Fun Lunch – IS BACK!!!
Please place your orders before December 12. If School Council is able to secure 5 volunteers to assist with fun lunch on a regular basis, then we will be able to have this opportunity more often for our students. All Fun Lunch volunteers do need a current police clearance. The time commitment is about an hour from about 10:30 – 11:30 on the day of the event. If you have a valid police clearance and wish to volunteer for Fun Lunch, please call Ms. Scherwitz in the main office and she will collect names for this volunteer opportunity.
The CBE's Well-Being team will host a free online session with the Community Health Promotion Services Team from Alberta Health Services on the topic of student mental health. You are invited to join the virtual session from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. You will be able to ask questions and hear from others with similar/different experiences, and resources will be shared.

Polar Bear Club
In January we will introduce the Polar Bear Club at Chris Akkerman School. This club is intended for days when the weather is beyond –20C and students still want to play outside at recess. When a child is properly dressed for the cold, the temperature will not make them sick. Viruses, such as rhinoviruses and influenza, cause colds and the flu, not the weather. Fresh air and exercise are healthy choices for their growing bodies.
More information will come in the following weeks.
Music Celebration of Learning
Our musical celebration of learning, that was put on hold in October, will take place on Friday, December 9 and Friday, December 16, 2022. Please join us in the gym as our students share what they have been learning in music so far this year. Here are the times each class will perform:
Friday, December 9 8:00-8:20 AM Tuesday/ Thursday Kindergarten ONLY
Friday, December 16
8:00 Grade 3
8:30 Grade 4
9:00 Monday/Wednesday Kindergarten ONLY
9:30 Grade 1
10:00 Grade 2
10:30 Grade 5
Each grade presentation will be about 10-15 minutes in duration. The other 15 minutes will be used to transfer students/ parents in and out of the gymnasium. There will be benches, some chairs and standing room for parents to watch the brief presentation from each grade. The gym doors will close promptly at the start of each presentation to ensure our presenters are not interrupted or distracted. Please ensure you arrive on time. Given our current state with illnesses in our school, our team would greatly appreciate if adults would wear a mask when visiting the school during this presentation. No one wants to be sick for the holidays. Your consideration of this request would be very appreciated.
