Gym - Megan

Dec. 2018

This year has been flying by and it’s hard to believe it’s December already!

We have been keeping busy and active in the gym with a lot of different things. A special thanks goes out to our practicum students from Mount Royal University, Emma and Oribel, for helping out for the past couple of months!

October kicked off our exploration of games through the Teaching Games for Understanding model, starting with striking and fielding games, like baseball, and we then moved into territory/invasion games, like soccer and basketball, for November and December.

This approach has allowed students to not only practice their fundamental movement skills, but to also experience playing games in small groups and experiencing what it might be like to move like the athletes that play these games for a living.
A particular territory/invasion favourite has been Make Me Move, a game in which students practice tracking either a visual, auditory, or tactile cue as they move from one end of the playing space to the other.

Students have also been learning about the different positions that players play during games, and we have been experimenting with small sided games to give students the chance to work on either being sneaky forwards, trying to score points or defenders trying to stop them!
