Principal's Message

The Week Ahead - September 20

Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community,
It has been a busy and fun week here at CI. Soccer games have started, cross-country had its first meet, volleyball try-outs wrapped up. We had our first fire drill.
We would like to thank all the parents that joined us for the virtual Parent Council/Band Council and Parent Advisory meeting on Tuesday evening. It was nice to see returning faces and to meet some new parents. We are very fortunate to have so many parents involved with School Council.  If you missed this meeting and are interested in participating this year, the next meeting will be Tuesday, October 12.
All of our students listened to Paul Davis speak yesterday. Students also had opportunities to ask him questions. Thank you to all the parents who also attended the session yesterday evening as well. We hope all students and parents found the session informative and valuable. Special thanks to our Parent Advisory Council for making this possible for our school community.
We had our first fire drill this week and it went smoothly. Students exited the building quickly and quietly and organized quickly on the field for attendance. We will have five more throughout the school year and 2 practice lockdowns. We will also make students aware of our first practice lockdown beforehand.
Today was our first math block. This year students will be focusing on financial literacy. Today’s class was an introduction to the topic.
Next week is another busy week.  We will have our virtual “bring your parents to school night” on Wednesday, September 22nd from 6:30 – 8:10.  This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to meet their child’s teachers. Ms. Hughson will also be available to share about our Student Success Centre and answer any questions regarding English Language Learners and Individual Program Planning questions. Ms. Dalwood and I will also be available at the end of the night for any questions. We will be following a regular day one schedule. We will be sending out a separate email with google meet links early next week.
We will also be having our annual Terry Fox run on afternoon of Thursday, September 23rd.  We are encouraging each student to bring a toonie for cancer research. We hold this event and the Terry Fox Foundation near and close to our hearts as so many lives are affected by cancer every day. Together we can make a difference. Please read more below for events next week to support our fundraising efforts.
Thank you for your continued support.
Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood

This year, Mid-Autumn Festival is on Tuesday September 21st. It is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. On this day, the moon is at its roundest and brightest, symbolizing togetherness and reunion. People decorate their places with lanterns. Families get together to have dinner, appreciate the moon, and eat mooncakes. For those celebrating this festival, we wish you and your family a happy and safe Mid-Autumn Festival!
