| Happy New Year and Welcome Back! Good afternoon Colonel Irvine School Community, We hope our students and families enjoyed the extended holiday break. We wish everyone a Happy New Year. As it is for most, we are looking forward to having a better, brighter and safer 2022. We will be expecting most of our students to return to school on Monday, January 10th. We will be following our regular bell schedule for classes in January: - Mon/Wed will be Day 1
- Tues/Thurs will be Day 2.
All of us are very hopeful that case numbers throughout the province will start to come down. In times like these, we need to work together to keep each other safe.
Please remind your child(ren):
- to stay home when feeling unwell – please use the checklist
- to come to the office and call home if they are feeling unwell while at school. Students will be sent home if unwell.
- to wear masks appropriately over the nose
- practice physical distancing whenever possible,
- follow safety guidelines for movement in the building
- handwashing and hand sanitizing when appropriate
If your child is away from school for illness or isolation or any other reason, please inform the office either by email or phone. There will be no online lessons available to students who are absent. Students can check D2L for homework and can email their teachers if they have any questions.

We'd like to welcome Ms. Breanne Caldwell to our school community. She will be filling in for Ms. Cindy Ly who will be away temporarily.

Music 5/6
We will delay the playing of wind instruments for our grades 5/6 students until further notice. We've placed an order for ukuleles and teachers will introduce that when the shipment arrives. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to monitor the situation. We will notify parents of any changes.
Basketball Tryouts
As of today, we have been given the go ahead to continue with our basketball season. This might change depending on our Alberta government. Unfortunately, spectators are not allowed for games or practices. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through these challenging times.

Masks and Rapid Test Kits
The government will be providing medical-grade masks and rapid test kits for students and school-based staff. In the initial phase, staff will receive kits to test at home twice per week for 2.5 weeks. More information about the tests and what to do with the results are posted on the Alberta Government website, including a video about how to use the test and a fact sheet translated into multiple languages.
We expect that these supplies will arrive by the end of next week. Information about distribution will be sent once we receive the items.
Transportation
Yellow school bus service may also be impacted by last-minute staffing challenges due to illness. Buses may be delayed or unable to run for the day due to driver availability. If your child's bus is delayed, please check the CBE transportation website for more information. Families should also have back-up plans in place if school bus transportation is unavailable.
Stay Home if Feeling Unwell
Now, more than ever, it is important that anyone feeling unwell must stay at home. Students and staff must use the daily checklist to identify if they should attend or stay home. Staff should also continue to follow the Should I Go to Work Today flowchart.
Reporting Positive Cases
The COVID-19 positive case notification process has changed. Alberta Health Services will no longer support schools to inform close contacts or the school community of positive cases. Schools will continue to monitor school absenteeism due to illness.
Prepare for Possible Shift to At-Home Learning
While maintaining in-person learning is a priority, schools are planning for potential transitions to at-home learning if required.
The decision to transition individual classes or grades to at-home learning will be based on staff availability and/or student absentee rates. All moves to at-home learning for entire schools or school authorities require approval or direction from the Minister of Education. Decisions to move individual classes or multiple classes within a school will be decided by CBE Administration.
We know the spread of COVID-19 has and will continue to impact staffing levels across the organization. Despite increasing our substitute teacher roster and continuously hiring new substitutes, we anticipate staffing challenges will occur.
