Good afternoon Colonel Irvine School Community,
We would like to thank all parents that attended School Council this week. It was great to hear that so many parents/guardians have signed up to volunteer for the school casino, a few are still needed, see Parent Council section below. The casino fundraiser has the biggest impact of all fundraisers for our school. We are so fortunate to have parents, guardians and friends volunteer their time to support our school. We are very thankful for this support. We would like to once again thank all parents that provided snacks for staff this Friday, we appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. We also heard from parents that they would really like for more 'fun' things to be happening at school for students. With the loosening of restrictions, we can offer some more activities for students. We will be holding an Activity Day on March 18th. We are also excited to be able to move forward with the badminton season after the break, more details to come. We have started planning for activities for the students at the end of the year and are meeting to organize our Grade 9 Farewell.
As mentioned last week, we will be holding a bubble tea fundraiser on March 17th with all proceeds going to the Drop-In Centre. Unfortunately, we will not be able to do any refunds if your child is absent that day. Orders will be put through on Wednesday.
Today during our non-instructional day many of our teachers are completing First Aid training and the rest are engaging in professional learning with respect to 1) Understanding Student Self-Harm and how to address and support students who are self-harming and 2) Learning about the Legislation around Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and the support and accommodations that schools can provide.
Please note we have moved up the Parent Council portion of our newsletter, you will find the rest of our usual updates following their section.
Thank you as always for your support.
Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood
Staffing Update:
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Ly back to the building. To provide a smooth transition for students, she will resume teaching her classes after Spring Break. Ms. Caldwell will remain in the classroom until the break and will be supporting in the school after the break too.
Ms. Gaw is away for short time. We will update 5A and 5B teachers about staffing next week.
Dates to Remember:
Tuesday, March 15th – Transfer deadline for high schools
Wednesday, March 16th – Last day for School Planning Survey - The purpose of this survey is to gather feedback from parents on school planning, which includes the school development plan, school budget, and school fees. THANK YOU to our Casino Volunteers! A few more needed (Mar. 16/17):
Thank you to everyone who has signed up! We are just short a few more, mostly backup positions: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0E44A5A922A5F58-colonel2
This is our BIGGEST fundraiser that covers student learning enhancement costs for 2+ years! For only two days of volunteering at a casino, our school receives approx. $50,000-$70,000 for our efforts! We hope you can support our school by volunteering for a shift...or two! It's a lot of fun to meet and chat with other parents during your shift.
There are several shifts over the two days so feel free to take on more than one shift. Volunteers are not limited to just parents/guardians! Neighbours, relatives and friends are all welcome to support our school as a casino volunteer as well!

Ramadan – prayer space?
This year Ramadan falls between April 2 and May 2. If your student requires an accommodation to leave class for prayers, please email Ms. Dalwood at nadalwood@cbe.ab.ca so that we can plan a space for the appropriate number of students.
Lifting of COVID-19 Measures
The Daily Health Checklist remains in place and the mandatory requirements to isolate if someone has tested positive for COVID-19 have not changed.
Updated guidance documents
The province has updated its guidance for schools. You can find more information on the Alberta Education website. The 2021-22 Parent Guide has also been updated. While a number of health measures have been lifted, we will continue to take a measured approach while assessing the evolving public health direction, as well as any changes to government guidelines. Most immediately, we ask for your patience as we make adjustments to operations in our schools and workplaces. While not required by students and staff to attend school or CBE work sites, we continue to strongly encourage vaccination for everyone eligible aged five years and up.
