Principal's Message

October/November 2020

Cold Weather
As the days get colder please think carefully about how your child is dressed for the day. Students will be outdoors daily and need to be dressed appropriately for the weather. If families require cold weather clothing for their children, we can help. Please contact Ms. Devitt in the office so we can get you what you need. Thank you for your support making sure your child is dressed for outdoor learning times.
Hallowe'en Activities at School
Teachers have communicated with families regarding their classroom plans for Hallowe'en – please ensure you are aware of what will be happening in your child's classroom. This year, we cannot allow any food or other items to be brought to school for sharing. As always, costumes depicting gore, violence or weapons of any kind are not allowed at school.
Remembrance Day Observance
November 11, 2020 is Remembrance Day and there is no school on this day. We are planning a simple observance of this day on Tuesday, November 10 for students and staff. This will be done by a Virtual Assembly that teachers will access with their students at 10:45am in the classrooms. We will ensure that some of the resources and photos that are shared with students at the virtual assembly will be posted on our school website in future, for families to view also.
Outdoor Learning Space News
Tulip and other flower bulbs have arrived this week, just in time for the weather to warm up. We will have each student and staff member plant a bulb so in the spring, we will see some beautiful flowers bloom!
Each class has been given a large rock for their class. Teachers will be talking and planning with students about the legacy they want to leave behind on the rock for the first year of our OLS. Some ideas might be each child's fingerprint on the rock, painting a class picture, choosing a special spot for the class rock in the Outdoor Learning Space, etc. The idea of “big rocks" reminded me of this story I heard long ago:
Student Safety
Families, if possible, please consider walking with your child to school, in order to avoid traffic congestion and frustration. If you must drive your child to school, please be aware that there is a playground zone on our street and the speed limit is 30km/hour. U-turns in the area at the front of our school are both dangerous and illegal -- please note the signage posted. Calgary Police Service has been notified of the multiple problems of illegal u-turns, double parking, speeding and parking facing the wrong direction and they will be monitoring and ticketing. There are options to parking in front of the school. Both the street beside Clarence Sansom School (to the west of our large play structure) and the cul-de-sac to the south east of our school (Pinehill Road) offer easy parking solutions. Please choose the safety of our children, over convenience.
Lunchroom Program
If you child has been staying for lunchroom, it will soon be time to register for this program. Please click this link and ensure you get your child registered for the lunchroom program. This link is also the way that families can access a waiver if necessary.
In order to stay at school for lunch, students must be registered in the lunch program.
Arrival at School
We have recently seen a sharp increase in late arrivals of students in the morning. When a student arrives late to school they miss out on opportunities for learning, important information and instruction which occurs at the beginning of the day. Additionally, a late arriving student disrupts the class. Please help your child to arrive to school on time each morning. Teachers greet students at their designated class entry door starting at 8:25am. The first bell rings at 8:27 to allow one class at a time to enter. At 8:30 the second bell rings to allow additional class entry at designated class doors. Students should not be entering the school through the front doors.
